Tesla enabled free FSD beta for our Model X so I gave it a spin… not a fan. Tech wise, I’m impressed that it works really well. I did’t make mistakes and I didn’t feel scared or concerned st all. BUT, it expects me to keep my hands on the wheel at all times, and it doesn’t have a camera in the cabin so it doesn’t actually know if I am doing that… so it asks me to gently move the steering wheel every few seconds. Like, driving on a straight road, I need to wiggle the wheel a little to let the car know my hands are where they should be. This makes the driving experience much more stressful than just driving by myself. If I forget to wiggle the wheel every few seconds, it beeps pretty loud, alerting me to do it. Which kind of freaks you out as it sounds like something is actually wrong. After 10 minutes of driving, I fail to react fast enough to the alert and the self driving feature shut off for the rest of the trip. It said this was strike one. Three strikes in total and the feature becomes permanently unavailable. I would be really unhappy if I had paid for this. Now, it’s not entirely Tesla’s fault. Part of this is regulation, but the regulation is necessary because of people. Until this thing can be trusted to drive without hands on the wheel, I won’t try it again. #ai #genai #tesla #fsd

I've been testing the latest version of Tesla's Full-Self Driving Beta (FSDB). It's pretty amazing to see how far the tech has come in the five years I've accessed it. This latest version update incorporated voice feedback from drivers who, since last year, have been able to record and send over the air ten-second reasons for why they disengaged FSDB. Tesla engineers mined that data to identify and triage problems they have begun fixing—a very cool driver-informed process. Unfortunately, Tesla hasn't solved my biggest FSFB annoyance yet. I have a factory-installed hitch that often carries my bike rack and bikes. When the rack is on, Foxy (my Tesla) thinks a car is tailgating us, like it did today (see picture below. The car pictured following me is my bike). And that makes FSDB Foxy twitchy; she wants to keep changing lanes to get out of the (not)car's way. So, once again, I disengaged FSDB and sent an explanation in hopes that with the next version download, there will be Hitch Mode that will help Foxy relax and stay in her lane. #electricvehicles #ev #innovation #tesla #cleanenergygeneration

Full Self-Driving take 12... This should be a reminder that product innovation evolves over time. There is a distance between strategy and execution leading to outcomes. The interesting thing to remember is that good strategy and vision does not have to be updated often and it is very easy to explain. Many years ago Elon Musk had a strategy and vision centered around self-driving electric cars. Every easy to explain over and over again, not always easy to do, even with seemingly unlimited desire and resources. The important thing though in a good strategy is to clearly understand what the desired outcome looks like. I don't know if version 12 will do it for Tesla, or if we will be here in a year from now looking forward to version 20 - I do know that everyone at Tesla understands what they are looking to build and they are clear on what done looks like. https://lnkd.in/eqqmJt4U

For the past five years, driving with Tesla's Full Self Driving (FSD) has been a journey of awe. Watching Elon and Ashok's live stream of the alpha version of FSD V12 on X in my neighborhood (Palo Alto/Stanford) on Friday was remarkable. The experience was surreal, as Elon described it as "all nets, baby." With minimal heuristic code, the system easily navigated stop signs, speed bumps, unprotected left turns, roundabouts, and even construction zones. FSD already had 300K lines of C++ code dedicated to heuristics, which caused the occasional jerkiness and phantom deceleration, so I had doubts about its ability to navigate Indian roads. However, this live demo demonstrated the capability of FSD's training to manage even the most challenging terrains. This strategy will likely result in FSD being able to even handle the roads and traffic in India. With Tesla's activation of a $400 million NVIDIA GPU cluster with 10,000 H100s and the launch of the $1 billion-plus Dojo supercomputer, the future of FSD training is poised to accelerate at an unprecedented rate. Tesla $TSLA owning the operating system for full self driving and licensing to manufactures makes a ton of sense. • More vehicles = more data • OEMs can focus on vehicle design and go to market. The capital intensive stuff. Very much mimics prior operating system formation. 🧠 IF FSD is real, this increases probability of success.

As of October 2023, Tesla's vehicles, even with the "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) package, are not officially certified as any level of autonomous vehicle. Tesla's current technology falls under Level 2: Driver Assistance, which means the car can help with some driving tasks, but the driver must always be paying attention and ready to take over at any moment. Journalists should stop spreading false information and do their job checking facts, instead of chasing audience (BTW, I'm a disapponted WP subscriber). For example, they could point at deceiving marketing campaigns, instead of indirectly supporting false claims.
