Lohith says that he "finally" gathered the courage to post about his new position at DataWars. But let me tell you more about how we met, and you'll see how courageous he's been, and how important is to push for what you love. I first became acquainted with Lohith in our nascent DataWars' Discord Server. At the beginning, it was me answering most of the questions from users, but one day this guy came with a weird Ironman profile picture helping other users in a random server. We didn't know each other, we didn't pay him, anything. He just saw a question and helped. First show of courage. A few weeks in, after answering questions here and there, he started asking his own questions. But they were nothing like simple Python/Pandas questions, he was asking about the mathematical derivation of the Bias–variance tradeoff 😳. He was taking a course about Machine Learning, and he was digging even deeper by his own means into topics that were not covered. Second show of courage. A few months ago, he randomly emailed me with an idea of building a project for DataWars. We didn't post a search or anything like that. He initiated the contact. We obviously were extremely happy to count with him in our team. Third show of courage. Lohith is a great example of how working hard and pushing for what you like will do for you. I have gotten several important deals in my life by just cold-emailing someone and being honest about how we could collaborate. Worst thing that can happen? They don't reply. So keep pushing, keep asking for what you want, and keep building connections. I hope Lohith's courage serves as a motivator.

Shubham Kamble, batch of '25, commenced his summer internship at Landstack - Center for Land! This internship provides Shubham with an exceptional opportunity to engage in crucial research and fieldwork focused on land administration and its socio-economic impacts. As a Research Intern at Landstack, Shubham's responsibilities are diverse and impactful. He will conduct a comprehensive literature review to gather relevant research and information on land administration, technology implementation, and their socio-economic implications. This foundational work will set the stage for his field activities. Shubham will conduct fieldwork in the states of Odisha, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, India, to gather primary data related to land administration schemes. His work will involve both quantitative and qualitative data analysis to identify trends and insights, contributing to a deeper understanding of the current land administration landscape. In collaboration with his team, Shubham will synthesize findings and contribute to research reports and presentations, ensuring that the insights gained are effectively communicated to inform policy and practice. Landstack - Center for Land focuses on the interfaces between technology and land administration, unraveling ground processes and impacts for more informed policy and practice. Land administration involves managing textual and spatial records detailing rights and territorial extents. Each nation faces unique challenges in land administration, shaped by history, social norms, demography, topography, and land use. While technology offers promising solutions, the project aims to highlight the nuanced aspects of technology in land administration, especially in the global south and India. Implementing technology in Indian land administration faces challenges, with limited regions surveyed and few states possessing updated land records. India's diverse land tenure systems add complexity, compounded by historical administrative legacies and various tenure systems. Shubham's project focuses on evaluating the implementation of key land administration schemes, namely DILRMP, SVAMITVA, OLRSD, and FRA, in the states of Odisha, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, India. In this role, I'll be leading our talented team of researchers in three main areas: 1. Ensuring our assessments continue to meet rigorous psychometric standards - so educators have the data they need to help all students be successful. 2. Investigating how data from Riverside assessments can be leveraged to help school leaders address critical issues - from improving student well-being to understanding the needs of multilingual learners. 3. Creating innovative assessments that are responsive to changes in education, such as - personalized learning, an emphasis on future skills, and a need for culturally relevant assessments.
