Punk rock or die. I thought this way about music for a long time. The early Punk ‘O Rama CDs (compact discs, from the 1900s)—NOFX, Rancid, Bad Religion, Total Chaos…you know? Brings us back to a time when I wore a DIY “R.I.P. Epitaph” t-shirt to represent the death of punk rock in the year 2000–a sign of my growing, and contradictory, disestablishmentarianism. My biggest lesson from this childishness is not to allow your own views and biases of what you think is cool to limit you from what’s actually cool. Since letting go of this limiting bias, I’ve discovered a rich, sonic world of reggae, hip hop, funk, jazz, blues, and folk.* *Recognition and credit to Black musicians around the world that have influenced and sustained musical innovation throughout history. (You may not think punk rock was also heavily influenced by Black musicians, but this is also true [give the band Death a listen]). Just because you don’t like something, it doesn’t mean it’s not cool. There’s always a world beyond our wildest imagination just outside of our boundaries of comfort and familiarity. #growthmindset #wellbeing

These are NOT indie bands, artists or musicians. The distinction between indie and 'indie' propped up by a major-owned distro or JV deal with a major is crucial. This graphic is a perfect example of the need for a clear delineation. #musicindustry #indiemusic #majorlabels

Punk rock journalist at Substack and soon-to-be-published author, formerly with Alternative Press and The Austin Chronicle.
AT THE SUBSTACK Parade Of Great Guitarists salutes Poison Ivy Rorschach, who was the musical brains of The Cramps: “We loved Chuck Berry, but we had a rule that we wouldn’t do Chuck Berry licks,” Ivy once explained. “All rock ’n’ roll from the '60s, going into the '70s, was based on Chuck Berry, at the exclusion of any other influence. So even though we loved Chuck, we decided to do all we could to not have that influence. There was too much, y’know?” She has a point. Even in punk, all roads lead back to Chuck, as filtered through Johnny Thunders. “Yeah, and it’s astounding,” she agreed. “You never would hear Link Wray influences or Duane Eddy. We couldn’t figure it out because it was pure rock ’n’ roll. It’s as monumental as Chuck Berry, and for it to be ignored seemed strange. So to this day, it’s a rule: we will not throw in a Chuck Berry riff.” All this and more at The Tim “Napalm” Stegall Substack, concluding Rockabilly Week after two weeks! #TimNapalmStegall #TimStegall #TimNapalmStegallSubstack #PunkJournalism #ParadeOfGreatGuitarists #PoisonIvyRorschach #TheCramps #LuxInterior #RockNRoll #Guitarist #Punkabilly #GarageRock #MusicLegend #SonicDepravity #RockabillyRebel #GuitarInfluence #RockabillyWeek #RockNRollHistory #Rockabilly #CulturalImpact #DuaneEddy #SubscriptionSpecial #HistoricalSnapshot #MusicLegacy #RockabillyLegends #SupportIndependentMedia #NapalmNation #SubscribeNow #RockabillyWeekSpecial #19.55percentoff #DiscountOffer #Monthly #Annually #ForLife #UpgradeYourFreeSubscription #BestWayToSupport

Imagine the rhythmic rebellion of Bob Marley's reggae intertwining with the electrifying energy of Metallica's heavy metal. This thought alone opens the doors to a universe where music transcends boundaries, eras, and genres. In an alternate reality, where Bob Marley and Metallica share the stage, the fusion of their distinct sounds would not only have been a monumental moment in music history but also a testament to the power of collaboration. It's a vivid reminder that the future of music lies in its ability to bring together disparate elements to create something entirely new and utterly captivating. This dream collaboration serves as an inspiration to artists and creators today. It encourages us to look beyond our musical comfort zones and explore partnerships that might seem improbable. The beauty of music lies in its diversity, its ability to evolve, and its capacity to foster unity through the fusion of different sounds and cultures. As we look to the future, let's embrace the spirit of innovation and collaboration, inspired by the might-have-been partnership between Bob Marley and Metallica. Here's to breaking more boundaries and creating more unforgettable moments in music. #MusicCollaboration #InnovationInMusic #BobMarleyAndMetallica #BreakingBoundaries
