Announcement: Funding Opportunity: 2024 Wild & Scenic Rivers Stewardship Partners Funding Summary: For the sixth consecutive year, USDA's Forest Service and the River Network announced funding availability for nonprofit and Tribal organizations working on or planning for stewardship activities on Forest Service-administered Wild & Scenic Rivers (WSR) and surrounding lands. Wild and Scenic Rivers are free-flowing rivers and help preserve recreation, fish and wildlife habitat, water quality, and cultural heritage. $200,000 is available for projects submitted by May 31, 2024. Why it matters: Preserving WSRs reflects the importance of outdoor spaces in our daily mental and physical well-being and fosters greater stewarding of these rivers for the future. This funding expands the diversity of organizations working with the Forest Service and ensures the protection of designated rivers and streams (including cultural, historic, recreational, and fish and wildlife values). Earlier this week we celebrated the Government announcement of a temperate rainforest strategy following our campaigning with the Lost Rainforests of Britain 🎉 This was a huge step forward to protect this unique habitat and now the dust has settled, campaigner and author Guy Shrubsole has taken a look at what this means in practice. What are the good bits? 💷 £750k for research and development into temperate rainforests 🦌 Work to target some of the key threats facing temperate rainforests, including deer and rhododendron 🏞 Local Authorities are encouraged to include temperate rainforest restoration in their Local Nature Recovery Strategies and National Park Authorities in their Management Plans 🌳 7 new Landscape Recovery pilots involving temperate rainforest restoration What's missing? 🎯 An overarching target or goal. The Lost Rainforests campaign called for a target of doubling the area of England's rainforests by 2050. 💚 The strategy doesn't commit to giving legal protections to more rainforest sites 🌱 There needs to more encouragement for landowners to allow natural regeneration As we head towards an election year, there is a key opportunity for all parties to share fresh commitments to protect and restore our temperate rainforests. On #WorldShorebirdsDay ABC is taking action to protect inland shorebird habitat at Utah's Great Salt Lake. The Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and an iconic American ecosystem. Declining water levels threaten habitat for over 300 species of birds, including the Eared Grebe, Marbled Godwit, & Wilson's Phalarope. As ABC’s President Michael J. Parr said, “We can’t afford to have this significant body of water turn into dust. Water management decisions need to prioritize both water quantity and water quality while balancing the needs of birds, people, and local economies.” We stand with our partners, Earthjustice, Center for Biological Diversity, Sierra Club (Sierra Club Foundation Sierra Club Utah Wilderness Advocates), Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, and Utah Rivers Council to protect the Great Salt Lake & the birds that call it home. New trees, as far as the eye can see... This #NationalTreeWeek, we are celebrating all of the tree projects, little and large, that we have been able to support this year! Here is just one example of some planting work delivered by FWAG South West at Honeydale Farm FarmED - The Centre for Farm and Food Education and was supported by Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL). It was done as part of a larger shelterbelts project. If you haven't heard of shelterbelts before, you are missing out! They are essentially a defence line of tall trees and shrubs, positioned along the edges of farmland to protect the area from strong winds and soil erosion. That's not all though - once established, they provide an abundant habitat for wildlife and become a natural flood management aid. Keep up with some of the other projects we've been supporting in the last year: - Ourboretum - a community growing project in partnership with BBC Gloucestershire which has been running since 2020 growing oak, beech and hazel trees in communities around Gloucestershire. We are down to our last 70 oak trees from Sherbourne, which will be homed this winter. - The continued running of a 3-year orchard training programme from Gloucestershire Orchard Trust, working on habitat surveys, grafting, pruning and much more, thanks to a £42k FiPL grant. GOT also received a more recent grant for planting and protecting 600 fruit trees. - A farm in Haresfield received a FiPL grant of £60k towards the restoration of 78 Perry Pear and Cider Apple trees and the creation of a new orchard with 120 new fruit trees. #TreeProjects #SoilErosion #WildlifeHabitat #FloodManagement #CommunityGrowing #FruitTrees #Orchards #TreeWeek #Cotswolds #Habitats #Farming

Finding Scotland’s ‘lost’ ice age pinewoods - from a Trees for Life news release.   A new project from Trees for Life and Woodland Trust Scotland aims to discover Scotland’s ‘lost’ native pinewoods – home to wild Scots pines with an ancestry that can be traced back to the end of the last ice age – so they can be saved and restored before it’s too late.   Caledonian pinewoods are globally unique and support rare wildlife including red squirrels, capercaillie and crossbills. Yet less than 2% of the Caledonian forest, which once covered much of the Highlands, survives. Just 84 individual Caledonian pinewoods are now officially recognised, having been last documented more than a quarter of a century ago.   But Woodland Trust Scotland and Trees for Life have become aware of other lost wild pinewoods, and from historical documents and anecdotal reports, more are thought to exist.   The charities have teamed up to identify and save these forgotten pinewoods through the Wild Pine Project, beginning with the western Highlands, where Scots pines form part of Scotland’s rare temperate rainforest.   “Lost pinewoods are at particular risk because they are unrecognised and undocumented. We want to find them, assess their condition, and revive them before they are lost forever,” said Jane Sayers, Wild Pine Project Officer.   “Finding these pinewoods requires a lot of detective work. They are often small and remote, hidden in ravines safe from deer. Pines, or their remains, are often found scattered among birchwood too.”   The Wild Pine Project is identifying lost pine sites by tracing their history through the centuries using historical evidence, including maps which date as far back as the 1500s.   Once potential sites are found, historical, ecological and landscape evidence will help establish whether they are wild or planted, and their health and resilience will be assessed. The charities will then work for the recognition and recovery of the discovered wild pinewoods, including by presenting findings to landowners and managers.   The need for urgent upscaling of political and public action to save the Caledonian pinewoods was spotlighted by a parliamentary debate held in the Scottish Parliament on 24 January, held to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Scots pine becoming Scotland’s national tree. This followed a motion put forward by Ariane Burgess MSP.   The new Wild Pine Project is funded by Woodland Trust Scotland, thanks to support from players of People's Postcode Lottery, and by Trees for Life, thanks to support from the The TreadRight Foundation.   For more details, visit treesforlife.org.uk.
