I can't vote in the EU elections, but I can certainly encourage those of you who can, to do so, and do so with both your heart and your head. Mine both point in the same direction - the environment should be right at the top of the list of things which decide the vote. The next EU political cycle will only be a real success if the environmental agenda accelerates and intensifies - with an EU Geeen Deal 2.0. That is what the science says, not the lobbies and politicians who are doing all they can to slow down progress; protect market share, business models and shareholder profits; and maintain consumer control. These influences cannot be allowed to dictate the speed, direction or content of the transition the EU and the world needs. If the EU moves faster on this, there's more chance that the rest of the world will, and if the rest of the world does, there may yet remain something worthwhile in the world for the people alive in it from the second part of this century onwards. I won't live to see much of what eventually happens, but I hope to live long enough to see humanity succeed in getting on the right track, FAST, starting with the EU during the rest of this decade. But that depends on your vote. And then, after the elections, it also depends on what you do as a responsable citizen afterwards, to make sure that EU institutions know they are being watched and scrutinised by you and millions like you. Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay 🌍     Bellona works to safeguard our environment and the health of our planet, through a democratic green and just transition. Climate policy is fundamental when it comes to environmental protection.     The upcoming European elections will inaugurate the new Commission's term, which has already been referred to as the "mandate of implementation" when it comes to climate policy.    This year, the central theme of World Environment Day is “Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience”. To mitigate climate change and restore ecosystems, it is crucial for emitters to be accurately held accountable for their climate impact. For this to be achieved, Bellona advocates for the separation of targets for ecosystem restoration, emission reductions and permanent carbon removals. 🌲🍃    In our recently published Roadmap 2024-2029, we call on Europe to lead the way to a climate-friendly environment for all, along with a set of recommendations. Whichever party wins the upcoming Election, the transition to net-zero is going to have to factor in their plans. But, in the short-term it will be costly and require co-ordination. “I’m on a mission to underscore that investing in the change we need now to secure a safe future is not a nice-to-have.” ~ Kayla Kingdon-Bebb This mindset is the only option for a decent, moral, functioning leader from now on. I so often hear that we can’t afford it. (A line I’ve been fed for decades…) Does someone want to put a price on saving humankind and the planet for me? At what price tag would it become affordable? And where would that money come from? That’s the point. The directionality is all wrong. If we put environment and people first - we will cultivate abundance. Not the other way around. Not “economy first”. What IS the economy after all? It is people; it is the environment. He tangata. E papa-tu-a-nuku. Who do we think holds responsibility for this? Bc it’s all of us. As the old Japanese proverb goes, “no single raindrop believes it is responsible for the flood.” We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We’re in a crisis of scarcity mindset. A fear of letting go of certainty; breaking from the herd mentality, a burnt out left-hemisphere in overdrive. Let’s think biiiiiiggeeeerr. Right-hemisphere: what if we trust communities? What if we actually designed cities for humans? What if we put relationships first? What it get this right?

In a live interview on NewsHub Nation yesterday, I sought to highlight the ramifications of New Zealand resiling from climate action - as has been variously proposed by the National Party and ACT, the key factions of our likely future Government. The cost-of-living crisis is with us for the short-term; like most other countries struggling with the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, Aotearoa’s economy will recover. #climatechange and #nature loss are existential crises. Their costs - both fiscally and in terms of lives, livelihoods and the wellbeing of people and nature - will span generations. Failing to act, or resiling from the efforts we’ve made under the Zero Carbon Act (which are working!), would place an unconscionable burden on the shoulders of our children, grandchildren, and even our future selves. It’s not just bad #policy, it’s morally reprehensible.
