"If you could have one thing right now that would change everything, what would it be?" Without fail, almost every time, a sample of homeless youth would respond, "a family." – 91 Place Transitional housing in Indianapolis can be detrimental for youth between the ages of 18 and 24, but there is Jenna Shaffer – an incredible woman who has gone above beyond establishing a basic transitional shelter. As the founder of 91 Place, a nonprofit that provides housing, education, employment, and mental health resources, Jenna Shaffer is actively breaking the cycle of generational poverty and chronic homelessness among youth. She has created a transformative space where leaving with a sense of belonging and security is objective number one. During this year’s 51st Jefferson Award Ceremony, Jenna was honored with a national Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for her work in transforming 91 Place into a haven for youth. Jenna Shaffer would have received the award in person this year for her incredible work at her transitional housing program, alongside other recipients who traveled to New York for the Annual Jefferson Award ceremony, but she had a unique circumstance just days before – welcoming a beautiful baby boy named Josiah into their home. Our host for the Jefferson Awards, Marc Mullins, graciously accepted the award on her behalf. This is an incredible Jefferson Award story.
