This rule is great but needs to be refined. A portion of these major streets (guessing 20%) are not really major such as Royal York Rd. But Islington Ave and Kipling Ave are fine. Some streets like Martingrove are major in some areas but side street in other areas. We need a more objective measure to allow the more quiet residential streets to be removed. Of the new rules apply to 80% of the streets now deemed major, and removed est. 20% from the change, you would get a very strong buy in. On these lessor streets encourage multiple townhouse dwellings to increase density, but not alter the characteristics of the area.
We are excited to share insights from our recent deputation by Negar Hashemi and Mohcine Sadiq to the Planning + Housing Committee regarding the Major Streets policy as part of the Expanding Housing Options in Neighbourhoods (EHON) initiative. Our team at Smart Density is committed to fostering inclusive and sustainable urban development in Toronto. Learn more about this policy in the first comment and how it can unlock Toronto's potential and create vibrant, accessible neighbourhoods for all residents. #UrbanDevelopment #MajorStreetsPolicy #InclusiveCommunities

I really like Paul Kalbfleisch’s perspective. As we continue the power shift from multilateral organizations (looking more impotent almost daily) and national governments (less and less representative of their populations) - we are seeing a rise of municipalities. And even the emergence of “municipal superpowers”. This is not to be understood as a rehash of the second half of the twentieth century (bi-polar) or the first decade of the twenty-first (uni-polar) - but as a collective, multi-polar network solving the world’s most pressing challenges. A big part of this - and what will amount to a reframing of leadership - is how we care for each other (Compassion) and how we experience play together (Joy). We (humanity) are doing a fairly good job of ruining it for our children and future heirs…we can do SOOOO much better…we have to.
Infrastructure for the Human Spirit sounds nice, but what exactly is it? First, let me tell you it isn't: ❌ Parks or public squares full of black cast iron benches all in a row and nothing more ❌ Places with sculptures or fixtures that visitors are not allowed to touch ❌ Spaces that lack opportunities for interacting with others We can all think of a few examples that fit the bill. Sure, you might stop by, but you don't stay long because there's no reason to. Never mind talking to a stranger. Infrastructure for the Human Spirit engages citizens in the community and builds social bonds. It can include: ✅ Developing inclusive community identity-building initiatives ✅ Redefining the purpose of public spaces to become engaging places of cultural celebration ✅ Incorporating public art that expresses and encourages community storytelling ✅ Breaking down social siloes by providing free space for public play ✅ Planning well-choreographed urban density with a focus on the diversity of the space and its inhabitants ✅ Viewing public mobility as a source of social engagement As we struggle with a Social Recession in which isolation and loneliness are at all-time highs, joyful cities recognize the power of Infrastructure for the Human Spirit to not only connect people but engage them in the type of storytelling that builds a sense of community. #urbandesign #urbanplanning #citybuilding #cityliving #publicspaces #joyfulcities

Why care about urban planning? It is much more than the organization of our physical and social spaces. It is much more than making people feel safe in space (although should be a priority). It is much more than creating convenient access to goods and services in your community. It is about finding ways to highlight and nurture the cultures that make our places unique. This is what will lead to sustainable community connection, which contributes to health and well-being of our society long term. What else do you feel is important to consider when planning our cities and towns for better human connection? #urbanplanning #placesforpeople #urbandesign
