We are all on a train with an unknown destination. I find it fascinating that before 2012, July was just a month like all the months but it became a milestone month for me after this happened. It was the month I got my very first job. I got posted for the annual University of Media, Arts and Communication internships to the Ghana Broadcast Corporation (Radio) and for me it was exciting to have a workplace ID card, to follow Senior Journalist to events being covered and being allowed to write the third and fourth paragraphs of story. For this reason, July always serves as a reminder of my why. Yes, the goal may have changed a little bit and with life’s ups and downs, one may get blindsided of the details of a goal but the vision remains the same. Yes, I was that teenager who got into trouble for staying up late to listen to radio programs and read the day’s paper to myself in the mirror when it was way past my bedtime. The goal then may have been to read the news. The vision is and has always been to guard society’s commitment to protecting all and to ensure social impact and transformation at all levels. So … do you also have a milestone month or moment in your career and why ? We should not normalize this ... we need to #PayInterns I am thinking about a freshly-minted doctor from Kebulonik village in Nandi, who managed to go to med-school through the goodwill of organisations like Wings to Fly, Coop Foundation etc, now back in the village and is being asked to travel to Nairobi for an unpaid internship. How will they be able to afford the expenses of daily work commutes or cover living costs during months-long internships. How is that doctor expected to produce the same rate if not higher (they need the money more) as a doctor who does not have to think about how they will pay rent? Internships, often praised as gateways to professional growth (aka duty as Madam CS puts it) unfortunately, come with a significant barrier for many: unpaid labor, yes its labour, otherwise you would not be hiring them. I digress from the core Sakaja issue, but I think we need to know that this belief that we have that interns are free labour continues to reinforce socioeconomic divides. By compensating interns, regardless of their background, we create a level playing field where talent, not financial means, dictates success. We all need to reshape the landscape of internships to be inclusive, accessible, and fair for all, that every individual, irrespective of their socioeconomic status, has the chance to thrive and contribute meaningfully in their chosen field. #InclusionMatters #FairInternships #EqualOpportunity #payourinterns #PayInterns

!!Paying the African Union for Internships!! In the world of internships, the expectation is often that the experience and knowledge gained are the primary rewards for the intern’s contributions. However, when an intern is required to bear the cost of travel, accommodation, and even health insurance, the dynamics shift significantly. The recent internship terms posted by the African Union doesn't consider the accessibility and fairness of such programs. By not covering essential expenses, the program inadvertently favours applicants from wealthier backgrounds who can afford these costs, thereby limiting opportunities for a vast majority of potential interns. The lack of financial support not only places a significant burden on the interns but also raises questions about the commitment to nurturing talent across the continent. How can we claim to build a brighter future for all when the gateway to opportunity is gated by financial barriers? This approach may also perpetuate a cycle where only those with existing advantages can gain the experience necessary to advance in their careers, further entrenching inequality. It’s crucial for continental organizations like the African Union to lead by example and ensure that their programs are inclusive and equitable. Internships should be a platform for growth, learning, and opportunity, not a financial hurdle. It’s time to reassess and realign the values that underpin these programs with the needs of all young professionals across Africa. Internship Wahala: Learning or Earning? As a young aspiring intern, I have personally encountered challenges that throw light on the unethical practices that some media houses engage in. During the last semester vacation, when I sent internship letters to some media houses, I was met with frustrating responses. Some would promise to call me back but never did, leaving me hanging in anticipation. Others crossed ethical boundaries by demanding payment, turning internships into commercial transactions rather than learning experiences. The most shocking encounter was with a media house CEO who audaciously asked me to buy a plastic chair before I could intern there. I couldn't help but wonder, had he forgotten the very essence of an internship? Was I expected to be an apprentice rather than a learner? Or is the organization 'hair dressers' media house? Sadly, I realized that these experiences were not unique to me. A female friend shared her own bitter story, narrating how a producer from a renowned media house had demanded sexual favors in exchange for an internship opportunity. Similarly, a male friend who was also interning at a media house in Accra, recounted how he was constantly running errands for senior journalists and producers, such as buying 'Gobɛ and Awaakye', and picking up their children from school. This prevented him from acquiring the essential skills he needed as a student journalist. I was left stunned and deeply saddened by these experiences. It raises the questions: what kind of country are we living in? Where has the professionalism and integrity of the media industry gone? Internships should be platforms for aspiring professionals to learn, grow, and contribute to their chosen field. They should provide equal opportunities, not favoritism based on financial means or personal favors. By taking advantages of hopeful interns, some media houses are perpetuating inequality and compromising the true purpose of internships. It is time for a change. Media houses must reassess their approach to internships and uphold the principles upon which they are built. An ethical internship culture should prioritize fairness, inclusivity, and professionalism. As aspiring professionals, we deserve the opportunity to learn and contribute without darkening our integrity. It is up to media houses to create a transformative and ethical internship culture, allowing young talents to establish themselves in the industry.
