#WorldWhaleDay brings awareness to the critical importance of protecting whales. Accidental collisions between ships and whales are an international concern. 🐋 🚢 ❗ The WSC Whale Chart offers seafarers critical navigational coordinates and concise graphics to identify routing measures and areas subject to static speed restrictions designed to protect whales and other cetaceans. This unique navigational aid is to help all navigators. Together, can help reduce ship strikes and safeguard endangered whale populations across the globe. Do your part to protect whales by sharing and downloading the WSC whale chart: https://lnkd.in/dfiGtctU Great Whale Conservancy ifaw Whale Guardians™ International Maritime Organization

Introducing Euronav, this company has taken a noble stand for whale conservation as they commit to another year as members of The League Of Whale Guardians™. Through this partnership, we have saved endangered whale lives from vessel strikes and will save many more in the year to come. Unintended vessel strikes are the leading cause of death for some species of great whales, even pushing them to the brink of extinction. Unfortunately with the global vessel fleet expanding the areas where vessel routes cross over critical whale habitat is ever growing, leading to a higher rate of unintended whale deaths each year. Whale Guardians™ has carefully crafted a plan of rerouting for ships across the globe in a manner that adds negligible time and distance to the vessel routes while saving the maximum number of whale lives. We urge other industries to follow Euronav’s example and take this critical step towards preventing your vessels from committing any unintended strikes in the future. #savegreatwhales #whaleguardians #jointheleague#greatwhaleconservancy #whalefacts #bluewhales #greatwhales #stopshipstrikes #shipstrikes #endangeredspecies #criticallyendangered#globalshipping #whaleconservation #oceanconservation

Thank you, my dear friend Jeff Corwin, for shedding light on the urgent need to protect the North Atlantic Right Whales and eloquently laying out their current challenges. When you venture out to sea, I strongly encourage you to explore the Whale Alert App developed by ifaw and partners. This powerful tool aims to safeguard this species from extinction. #WhaleAlertApp enhances safety by reducing the risk of fatal ship strikes by large vessels. It provides insights into active whale zones, recommended routes, areas to steer clear of, and real-time warnings in shipping lanes across US and Canadian coasts. This empowers vessel operators to slow down and heighten their vigilance, minimizing the chances of whale collisions. #NorthAtlanticRightWhales #MarineConservation https://rb.gy/8n7wj

🌊 Navigating the Seas: the IALA Cardinal Buoy System The cardinal system is a globally recognized navigational tool developed by the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA). Its cardinal buoys mark safe passages and indicate the direction of deeper water, helping ships avoid hazards and find the safest route. 🧭 Remembering the color and arrangement of stripes helps mariners quickly identify the cardinal direction associated with each buoy. These buoys are often placed to indicate safe passages around dangerous shoals, rocks, wrecks, or other navigational hazards. Each cardinal buoy is uniquely colored and numbered to correspond with one of the four cardinal directions: North, East, South, and West. 🛳️ When approaching a cardinal buoy, mariners use the principle of "Red Right Returning." This means that when returning from the open sea, you should keep the buoy to your right side to navigate safely through the channel. Following this rule helps ships stay in deeper waters and avoid potential dangers. Understanding the IALA Cardinal Buoy System is an essential piece of the Navigational safety puzzle. #IALA #NavigationalAids #Maritime #Navigation #SafePassage #Expertise

This week, the 2024 NOAA/USCG/EPA voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) zones went into effect. 🚢 From May 1st to December 15th (in Southern California) and to December 30th (in San Francisco and Monterey regions), large vessels are strongly encouraged to slow to 10 knots or less while transiting through these zones to reduce the risks of vessel strikes. ⚠️🐋 These specific areas contain populations of federally protected blue, humpback, and fin whales. Whale Safe works to display near real-time whale and ship data designed to prevent fatal ship collisions with these endangered whales. 🐳 As we head into the 2024 season, we’re reflecting on the past 2023 VSR season. We pulled together this season’s vessels and whale stats – check them out at our latest blog post! 👉 https://lnkd.in/gWgRDThd Learn more about Whale Safe at www.WhaleSafe.com 💙
