🔉2024 Desertification and Drought Day: Let's Go from #Degradation to #Regeneration! Desertification and drought are pushing Africa's #soils to the brink of collapse, imperiling the continent's #foodsecurity, #biodiversity, and #sustainabledevelopment. We must take bold action to restore soil health and ecosystem resilience. On this Desertification and Drought Day 2024, we face a choice: ❌ Let the sands of time bury our potential ✅ Or, join forces to revive our degraded lands Together, #ecosystem restoration workers, farmers, local communities, governments, and other stakeholders must unite to: 🗝️ Map and assess more degraded lands, identifying priority areas for #restoration. 🗝️ Develop and implement community-led #restoration plans, integrating traditional knowledge and modern techniques. 🗝️ Establish nurseries and cultivate millions of native #trees and shrubs, fostering the growth of thriving forest ecosystems, not just solitary trees, to create vibrant patches of forested lands that support #biodiversity and ecosystem services. 🗝️ Implement #regenerativeagriculture and #agroforestry practices on millions of hectares of land. 🗝️ Develop and deploy climate-resilient water harvesting and storage systems. 🗝️ Provide training and support for thousands of #farmers and #pastoralists. 🗝️ Advocate for #policyreforms that prioritize #ecosystem #restoration and sustainable land use. The fate of Africa's #ecosystems hangs in the balance. Let us unite to #heal the #land, and secure a future for generations to come. #Africa #desertification #drought

🌍 Today is the World day to combat #desertification and #drought. This year's theme for World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is: “United for Land. Our Legacy. Our Future.” Desertification and droughts are issues of a truly global dimension and forecasts estimate that, by 2050, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population. 🌳 Our Highland Restoration project in Northern Ethiopia is on a mission to restore a precious ecosystem, prevent soil erosion, and enhance biodiversity in the Tembien Highlands in Ethiopia. The project also promotes water access by creating percolation ponds and supporting sustainable land management. 🌍 On the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought on June 17th, we stand proudly by the theme ‘United for Land. Our Legacy. Our Future.’ The Wyss Academy for Nature’s Hub East Africa, and community group Green Earth Warriors and Justdiggit , are championing wealthier people in healthier landscapes through climate smart initiatives. In just one year, hundreds of acres of degraded land have been restored using thousands of semi-circular bunds. 💡 A further step in sustainability is the recent harvesting of hundreds of kilograms of grass seeds from these bunds, which will be planted in more bunds and even offered for sale. 🌱 This will not only provide alternative income but will also support pastoralism / culture and wildlife for tourism. 👏 #regreening #desertification #drought #naturebasedsolutions #goodnews #seedharvest

This image from #Sentinel3 from the #copernicus program taken on the 16th of September show the #Wildfires that continue to affect #Canada. 17.3 million hectares have burned (an area larger than #Austria and #Hungary) Wildfires are common in Canada's western provinces, but this year the eastern provinces of Nova Scotia, Quebec and parts of Ontario have also reeled from out-of-control wildfires. As of Wednesday, there were 1,054 active wildfires in Canada, including 230 in the Northwest Territories and 669 deemed out of control, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center. 😢 Habitat loss 😥 Biodiversity loss 😷 Air Quality warnings issued 🌎  Loss of life, livelihoods, homes and possessions.
