🛰️ EUMETSAT just released pre-operational data from Europe’s first satellite-borne lightning imager; the images are striking! ⚡ 📷 Data from #MTGI1's Lightning Imager provides weather forecasters in Europe, Africa, and beyond with unprecedented insights into storm activity. 🌩️ This is set to improve the monitoring and prediction of severe weather, offering crucial support to communities and industries like aviation. 🌪️ By observing abrupt changes in lightning activity, forecasters will be able to better predict storm development and severity. 🌍 This animation shows the development and movement of thunderstorms over Europe.

Every frame shows the flashes over the past two hours, coloured from white (those occurring in the most recent 20 minutes) to dark red (100-120 minutes ago). Larger and more persistent eastward-moving lightning clusters in the eastern and south-eastern parts of Europe represent mesoscale convective systems. More localised short-lived afternoon thunderstorms appear in Italy and over the Alps. On the last day shown in the animation, a high-latitude outbreak of thunderstorms moving eastward from Finland can be seen. Smaller stripes of flashes are visible within wider storm areas, demonstrating that the Lightning Imager is capable of tracking individual storms cells. This animation was made using three days’ worth of Lightning Flash (LFL) data from the MTG-I1 Lightning Imager, from 00:00UTC 22 June 2024 UTC to 23:59 UTC 24 June 2024.

How does performance and accuracy compare to lightning detection precision networks operating globally for the past 20+ years? They track location down to few hundred meters as well as intensity in real time… and modelling projects thunderstorms evolution over following 2-3 hours. That’s a high bar to beat. Simon Jackman - very cool. A tool to help develop NRT flood monitoring...?
