I think the launch of ZEAM, the world's first fully electric and autonomous passenger ferry by Norwegian technology provider Zeabuz in Stockholm, marks a groundbreaking step towards a sustainable and efficient future. The inclusion of an AI-based "digital captain" utilizing radar, LiDAR, infrared, and cameras for navigation, along with ultrasonic sensors for automatic docking maneuvers and GPS for positioning, showcases a remarkable integration of technology for a safer and more efficient commute. In the Sustainable Solutions Workshop at the Institute of Design (ID), Illinois Institute of Technology a team of designers explored everyday infrastructural solutions in the energy transition. The design team deconstructed the current charging station model based on large-scale retail infrastructure that controlled the raw material that flowed through the pipes, which the Industrial Designer Eliot Noyes envisioned for Mobil Oil in 1960. Because we now have energy generation, transmission, storage, point-of-sale charging, and payment, all distributed across many industries and players, each one of these aspects can be further deconstructed and redesigned. When considering these new design opportunities, the design team of Keval Parekh and Sunaina Kuhn conceptualized ferries as energy generators and charging stations. Similar to the impact of the design of gas stations created by Industrial Designer Eliot Noyes to Mobil Oil in 1960, EV charging stations are today’s version of a historical opportunity to change society with design. Canadian cleantech companies play a key role in driving innovation in support of Canada’s climate change goals. Supporting their important work is critical to positioning Canada competitively in the global market for clean technologies and creating a sustainable future for all Canadians. Recently, our Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) and Innovate BC announced research and development funding for 13 companies in British Columbia that are piloting cleantech projects as part of an effort to support the development of a greener B.C. and bolster the province’s cleantech sector. 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲, 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁… 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 Being an entrepreneur in the cleantech space, I often get asked what I would consider a successful company in the ecosystem - Depending on whom you ask, people will rate success based on: • number of clients • size of the company • amount of money raised • exit results • … But there is one criteria that most of the entrepreneurs in cleantech space have in common - 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁! Although, it can have different facettes like: • energy or co2 saved (energy efficiency) • Renewable energy and new technology deployed (decentralization) • Efficiency of integration and leverage of resources (digitization) … all these goals support a better energy and climate future! To commit to these measures requires dedication, long-term commitment and optimism to get going. Since for the attraction of the needed money, the first type of measures are key. And this can create significant tension. At the contrarian summit I was discussing on apanel with Amir Fishelov and Simon Daniel about our experiences and just based on these few minutes of exchange it became clear: There is no one pathway in cleantech entrepreneurship but one major element -  we can only get it done together.
