There's 100's of talented designers available. Yet, companies are struggling to hire designers. Thoughts as to why: - Companies want "end-to-end" product designers because they need more bang for their buck. That's the reality of the economic environment we're in, budgets are being squeezed. - Hands-off managers who don't want or can't execute IC work to a high level. In my world of working with VCs, these people will not work at early-stage companies. You need to be doing the work and leading. - Non-design hiring managers can't determine which designer will be a long-term fit. i.e. you will need a different type of designer at seed stage to series B. The founding designer role IMO is the toughest role to get right. - The return of "hybrid". London is a vacuum for top designers who want to be in the office 2-3 days a week.

The reality is a lot of designers don't have the luxury of being able to follow design processes to the absolute T when working in environments where they have to ship fast. This doesn't mean they're not capable of doing so. Be open minded to this when hiring, otherwise you're losing out on some top creative talent.

Hiring a Product Design Director is difficult. You have to do a lot of 'selling yourself' to them to get them on board. They want to know a few things: 1. Where are you now? And where do you want to get to? 2. What's your appetite for growth? Don't just assume they want to hear that you wanna be the 'fastest growing agency in the UK'. Product Design Leaders are methodical, and extremely analytical. So, smart, calculated growth is essential. 3. What's an example of you putting design first in the business? 4. What does working 'cross-functionally' mean to the business? 5. What are you losing by not having this design leader? Come prepared. Be clear. Be honest. To ensure you're securing the best person for what you need. And that's exactly what the product design studio that we've partnered with, are doing 🙌 Product Design Director. London. £85-100k

This week I delved into the qualities that are crucial when hiring product designers with a leader in the design space. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: 💡 Seek designers who are on a steep growth trajectory. Look for individuals who have gone from zero to stellar design skills in a short time. Their enthusiasm and dedication to improving rapidly are key indicators. 💡Don't solely judge applicants by their design portfolio. Instead, focus on their passion for design and their eagerness to learn and adapt. 💡During interviews, probe their opinions on the influence of technology on the design profession. Their insights into how tech intersects with design can reveal their depth of understanding. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: 💡When assessing senior candidates, their work should consistently exhibit a high level of quality. Technical proficiency becomes less of a concern at this stage. 💡Look beyond the 9-5 job. Examine their involvement in the design community. Are they actively participating, sharing knowledge, or mentoring others? Genuine interest in the field is a powerful indicator. 💡Inquire about their views on current design trends and the importance of human-centered design in the industry. Senior leaders should have insightful perspectives to share. Hiring top product designers is tough. Finding individuals who possess the right skills but also demonstrate a commitment to continuous growth and a passion for the field will help to build stronger, more innovative design teams Feel free to share your experiences and tips when hiring in the product design area 🙂

🟢 Green Flags When Hiring a Designer🎨 In a world where design plays a pivotal role in shaping perceptions and driving success, finding the right designer is paramount. As you embark on this creative journey, keep an eye out for these 5 green flags that indicate you've found the perfect fit: 1. Passion Illuminates Work: A designer who speaks about their projects with enthusiasm radiates passion. Look for someone who views each project as an opportunity to create something remarkable. 2. Diverse Portfolio Palette: A diverse portfolio showcases adaptability. Seek a designer who confidently navigates various styles, industries, and mediums, revealing their versatility. 3. Client Collaboration Dance: Effective communication is key. A designer who listens, asks questions, and values your input shows they're committed to a collaborative dance that brings your vision to life. 4. Problem-Solving Picasso: Design is more than aesthetics; it's about solving challenges. A designer who discusses how they've tackled complex problems creatively demonstrates their ability to think outside the box. 5. Feedback-Welcoming Attitude: Design thrives on iteration and refinement. An open-minded designer who welcomes constructive feedback and iterates based on it is dedicated to achieving the best results. Remember, when hiring a designer, it's not just about skills but also about finding someone who aligns with your vision, communicates effectively, and embraces the art of collaboration. 🌟 #DesignExcellence #HiringTips #CreativeCollaboration

You would never get your architect to design half your house and then design the other half yourself because "you've been in a house". There's technical knowledge, design expertise, and professional standards they are working within. Hiring an event professional is like hiring an architect for your event. If you cut out parts of the scope to manage it yourself because you "know what events entail", you're missing out on having their technical knowledge, experience, and design expertise applied to your whole event. It's the difference between having "hired help" who can check off tasks for you versus having a trusted advisor that can help design an impactful experience for your attendees. I don’t know about you, but I’d never move into a house that was only half designed by a professional architect…. #events #eventprofs #eventdesign
