On July 8th, it was our honor to welcome Veteran Coalition International, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), and distinguished visitors and guests to the Military Women's Memorial for "A Salute To Bravery." Colleagues from across multiple countries participated in both vital and timely discussions as NATO celebrates its 75th anniversary and the NATO Summit is taking place in Washington, DC. The panels highlighted the contributions women have made in the armed forces, considered the role that society should fulfill for the reintegration and future productivity of those who have served, and discussed whether, and to what degree, supranational bodies such as NATO and the EU might play a role in highlighting the importance of veterans as a national resource to build societal resilience and future prosperity. A recording of the event can be seen here - https://lnkd.in/exDC6aEE We extend our gratitude to Veteran Coalition International and their team for putting together these incredible panels and providing this opportunity for these and future discussions focusing on all who serve across our NATO nations.

TODAY at 1PM ET - NEW MWM HER STORY PODCAST episode . Host Military Women's Memorial President Phyllis Wilson welcomes Catherine Bourgin, granddaughter of WWI Hello Girl Marie Edmee LeRoux. An incredible advocate for her grandmother and the Hello Girls, Catherine Bourgin tells the story of Edmee LeRoux, her grandmother, and shares about the challenges and long road to Veteran status for the WWI Hello Girls who served in the Amy Signal Corps during WWI. “When the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) were deployed to France during World War One, General John Pershing issued a request for a unit of women to serve as switchboard operators and real-time translators so that the French and American officers could coordinate under fire. Over 7,600 women volunteered for the first 100 slots. Eventually, 223 women would serve in the Signal Corps Telephone Operator Unit (Female) – colloquially known at the “Hello Girls.” They were the first unit of women to directly contribute to combat operations in American history.” Along with 222 American and Canadian French-speaking women, she answered General Pershing's call for women to serve as U.S. Army Signal Corps Telephone Operators overseas in France, known affectionately as the "Hello Girls." LeRoux sailed overseas with Unit #4 from the Port of Embarkation in Hoboken, New Jersey on June 18, 1918, on the USS Lapland to France. She was discharged from service on June 6, 1919. She decided to resume her music studies and lived her life in France until December 1941, when she returned home to the United States for the last time. She is buried at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood, Maryland. - From WWI Centennial Commission “HER Story: 3 Million Servicewomen’s Stories” can be heard exclusively on Wreaths Across America Radio each Wednesday afternoon at 1 pm EST.
