Tonight, all eyes will be on the semi-final World Cup match between Australia and England. It’s set to surpass the records smashed on Saturday night as one of the most watched sports events. Blokes in suits, singlets or Matildas jerseys are following intently in pubs. Women’s sports “true believers” are feeling delirious and validated. Kids of all genders in Australia’s most inclusive sport are seeing it as a passport to the world. And millions of everyday Australians are discovering the special vibe: crowds who love the game not only for the thrill of the game, but for what it stands for. Women’s football has always meant much more than the game itself. After being banned for decades, it has come to represent a social movement towards women’s empowerment, gender equality, and inclusion, especially of LGBTIQ+, First Nations, and other historically disadvantaged groups. Viewership & Attendance have been up significantly compared to prior Women’s World Cups but there are still huge disparities in terms of #EqualPay. These disparities are attributed to considerably smaller contracts for broadcasting rights as well as the Women’s World Cup still being in its infancy (2023 marks only the 9th tournament since its start 32 years ago). For the 2023 Women's World Cup, FIFA is offering a total of $150M, compared to $440M for the 2022 Men's World Cup. 👀According to CNN, women players on average will earn 25 cents for every dollar earned by the men last year. 🏀"A rising tide lifts all boats"... 🏀 What a fantastic testimony for British Basketball and its the women who do it again! 🏆 Congratulations Vanja Cernivec Shivani Laddha and the entire London Lions team. 👏 With the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) women's team also clinching a trophy before their male counterparts, it brings to light a pivotal issue: Despite the financial hurdles involved for rightsholders supporting two teams and acknowledging the commercial disparities between men's and women's sports, the necessity for the sports ecosystem to embrace equity is undeniable. There is a pressing need to ensure equal opportunities, broadcast coverage, and sponsorship backing for both men's and women's sports, especially when women are proving to be equally, if not more, successful. These achievements highlight the vast talent, commitment, and commercial potential in women's sports, signalling a crucial moment for not only rights holders but the entire sports ecosystem—including governments, brands, agencies, fans, broadcasters and the media—to adopt an equitable approach in allocating opportunities, resources, and visibility to women's sports. On November 21, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the adoption of a new gender eligibility regulation, prohibiting transgender cricketers who have undergone male puberty (regardless of any surgery or treatment undertaken) from participating in top-tier women's cricket. This decision, aimed at preserving the integrity of the international women's game and ensuring player safety, follows an extensive consultation process and aligns with scientific principles. Geoff Allardice, Chief Executive of the ICC, emphasized inclusivity while prioritizing the protection of the women's game. The regulations, subject to a two-year review, were prompted by cricket's inclusion in the 2028 Olympics. Canada's Danielle McGahey, the first transgender cricketer in an official international game, expressed disappointment at the ban. The Women's Rights Network (WRN) applauded the ICC's decision. The rules presently pertain to international women's cricket, leaving gender eligibility at the domestic level to individual Member Boards, potentially influenced by local legislation. Notably, transgender athletes face similar bans in various elite women's competitions across sports like swimming, cycling, athletics, rugby league, and rugby union.
