This #Juneteenth, we recognize organizations like The Black In Gaming Foundation, Black Voices in Gaming, and Black Girl Gamers who advocate for inclusive online spaces and uplift Black professionals in the gaming industry. Games and immersive media have the power to tell meaningful stories that capture the rich histories and cultures of Black communities. One of my favorite examples to highlight is an immersive web experience called "Secret Garden," created by Stephanie Dinkins. It allows us to step into the oral histories of Black women, from surviving a slave boat and a 1920s Black-owned farm to surviving 9/11, and encountering an AI powered by Black women. Today, we celebrate these stories, their creators, and their impact. Check the link in the comments for more on the Secret Garden.

Check out my conversation with the wonderful Amy Devers about building our collective memory!
NEW Ep. 215: Kinfolk’s Idris Brewster Uses AR to Empower Collective Memory Building 💥🧠 Artist, creative technologist, and educator, idris brewster grew up in Brooklyn, being filmed for a documentary about his education as a black student at a prestigious, primarily white, school. His coming-of-age, only partially caught on camera, included a lot of basketball and hands-on artistic development. A grant awarded in college gave him early access to VR technology which opened a path to combining all of his talents and interests and expressing them through new media. Now, as co-founder and Executive Director of Kinfolk Tech, he’s harnessing augmented reality, location-based technology, and community to engage in placing digital monuments in public spaces, memory building, and foregrounding the Black, Brown and Queer histories that have been intentionally silenced. Join us tomorrow, Wednesday February 7, 2024 @ 6:30pm at the Gala Hispanic Theater in DC for "Ni De Aquí, Ni De Allá: The Afro-latino/a/e/x Dilemma: Part Of Both (Black And Latin), Excluded By Both" Embracing multifaceted identities as Afro-Latinos/as/xs, woven from African and colonial European legacies, we must confront the reality that some within our cultural community, often due to the miseducation ingrained in Eurocentric systems, reinforce anti-Black practices like colorism and discrimination. Studies estimate Afro-descendants in Latin America to number approximately 250 million, highlighting the vastness and importance of this struggle. This event delves into these nuanced experiences, exploring how Afro-Latino/a/xs navigate these intersecting identities to forge a complete sense of self and center Blackness within our lived realities and how we combat these biases through education, representation, and dismantling Eurocentric power structure. Today, I was honored with the opportunity to present my thesis research at the Bings Honors College Closing Ceremony as a representative of the African and African American Studies (AAAS) Department, Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CSRE), and the Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (FGSS) Program at Stanford University! Black video game modding, the intentional alterations made to gameplay by Black players, is my research subject. While academic discourse casts video games as mere avenues for escapism, I, as a Black gamer, posit that Black engagement with video games is deeper than that. It is about affirming our presentness—our identity and our reality. Through methodologies grounded in case study, narrative inquiry, autoethnography, and phenomenology, I argue that for Black gamers, modding is a profound act of Black pleasure activism, where we deliberately craft moments in digital spaces to affirm our Blackness in this reality by caring for our aliveness in an alternative one. My research aspires to expand our understanding of pleasure—positioning it as a time-bound, tangible, and self-activist gesture of permission to feel good, underscoring Black vernacular technological creativity as more than representation—it is about dignity. #senioryear #thesis

Dear Creative, Collaborate with your peers from different disciplines to create your own networks of agencies at the intersections of your expertise. The traditional individualism model is fading away and its gatekeepers are grappling to move with the times. But you should if you haven't already It's time to leave before it's too late. It's time to get on the overground railroad. Utilize your skills and networks to connect with like-minded individuals. Let others keep their awards. We can establish our own space with transparent criteria that we all agree upon, unlike the rigged systems in place. You have the capability to do it. Be prepared not just for yourself, but also for the black children aspiring to be creative professionals. Considering the current state of the industry, you might not recommend it to them. But you have the power to break free from this morally and ethically flawed industry that disregards black talent. Step away and create environments where our future can flourish without constant doubt. You are already great; you just need collaborators who share your vision. Sincerely,
