Did you know there is a day to recognize and celebrate rural women? There is! October 15th - International Day of Rural Women was established in 2007 by the UN General Assembly and celebrates the strength and achievements of women in the sustainability of rural households and the general well-being of the community, despite the struggles and the stereotypes. I have split my life between rural New England and urban DC. Here are 3 things I learned growing up in a town of 300 people that helped me navigate life and the big city: 1. Help your neighbor. Where they worship or the color of their skin really doesn’t matter. And you may need a hand someday… 2. Plan ahead. Whether its the weekly grocery run, canning and freezing the garden’s abundance, or getting enough firewood stacked to get through 6+ months of winter, these activities take time and waiting until you are hungry or cold rarely works out well. 3. Focus on the big picture. When seasons are short, you don’t have a lot of time to prepare for what’s inevitably coming and getting distracted by life’s little dramas only puts you further behind.
