This is a thoughtful farewell message from a long time leader in my field. I appreciate his reflection on the fallacy of environmentalists claiming the moral higher ground. Our movement is nearly dead. We killed ourselves. We gutted true morality by caving in to Big Pharma, by Voting Blue No Matter Who, by believing the lies peddled by race-baiting mainstream media propagandists, and by obsessing over carbon dioxide while ignoring throngs of more compelling and scientifically valid perspectives on climate. Environmentalism has become less focused on fighting for biodiversity and more concerned about vaccination status and towing the Democratic party line. It’s all about calling people anti-vaxxers, racists, and climate deniers. That’s why we’re losing. The majority in this country think we’re fanatical nut jobs. And in many ways they’re right. I work for some of the biggest greens out there and I don’t call myself an environmentalist anymore. It’s almost shameful. Where will our cause be in 20 years? I don’t think our destiny will be determined by cutting edge litigation or grassroots organizing. Our future will be determined by whether we can have a beer with a Trump voter and not judge them, whether we can hire people based off merit rather which demographic box they check, and whether we can admit that we are wrong about a lot of major cultural issues. Sadly I don’t think most enviros can handle that and I know for certain that our organizations are suffering under the weight of knowing we’re wrong. We’re losing. Because we always claim the moral higher ground, even if we’re dead wrong. Because we reject humility and humanity towards our opponents. Because we censor debate and peddle whatever narrative brings in more donations. Good luck in your next endeavours, John Horning. I hope for your legacy that we can straighten out our act and come back to reality.
