Campbell Smith Architects of Duxbury, Massachusetts, has been hosting a summer camp for 12 to 16-year old campers interested in architecture for 30-years!! This camp is an inspiring example of Campbell Smith Architects’ commitment to giving back to their local community and to their craft. It was an honor and a pleasure for myself, and Pella Windows & Doors, to have the opportunity to play even a small role in this special program once again this year. The campers were marvelous and if they represent the future of architecture, we certainly have a lot to look forward to in the years to come!! Campbell Smith Architects, Inc., is a prolific design firm located in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Their impressive portfolio of literally hundreds of successful projects and satisfied clients is a testament to not only decades of hard work, but also to an immense amount of collective architectural and artistic talent. Naturally, firms like Campbell Smith Architects, Inc., are in a constant state of high demand. In spite of this, every summer principal Pamela Campbell AIA sets aside her time to host Arch-kid-tech Camp at their Depot St office. This program provides 12 to 16 year-old campers interested in architecture a chance to dig a little deeper into the field and to explore whether a career path in architecture may be a potential option for them to pursue. With special workshops, field trips, and hands-on drafting, the campers are given a sense of what the day-to-day life of an architect entails. The campers even have an opportunity to design a house or a building during camp. This incredible program is now in its 29th year!! Last week I had the great pleasure of discussing an overview of windows and doors, an important portion of the architectural process, with the campers. The discussion began with a brief history of windows and doors, followed by their important function/s, and finished with the many styles and substrate options that are offered within the fenestration industry today. It’s always great to have a chance to visit projects years after they have been completed, though it seems there are not many opportunities to do so. Typically, by the time the dust settles and the landscaping is in place at single family residential projects, the jobsite is no longer active and understandably most homeowners want and deserve privacy… especially after living through what at times can be a stressful building process.
