Il Borro “Wine of the Week” Il Borro "Pian di Nova" Toscana Rosso, IGT. 2020 Rating: 92 Points James Suckling Description: If you owned a winery in Tuscany, Italy and produced a red wine from a blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Sangiovese, could it be identified as a Super-Tuscan, Toscana Rosso, Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT), or just simply as a red blend from Italy? The correct answer to this question is actually all four! Additionally, Il Borro produces a wine like this and it is called “Pian di Nova.” The literal translation of Pian di Nova means “New Plateau.” The idea behind this name is to give the impression of a “New Frontier” for the winery due to the wine’s distinctively unique blend.

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG Farina winery. wine and pride of the Valpolicella Classica, it comes from a careful selection of grapes put to dry in the typical fruit for about four months. Meticulous control of the grapes during drying and the right aging of the wine between barriques and oak barrels of Slavonia develop complexity of aromas and flavors, to finish harmonizing in cement tanks. Elegant, soft and balanced, it is an expression of tradition, terroir and passion.

DANTE RIVETTI BARBARESCO BRICCONDE NEUEIS DOCG VENDEMIA 1997 Dante Rivetti Winery is an Italian winery located in the Piedmont region, specifically in the commune of Neive, which is part of the renowned Barbaresco wine-producing area. The winery is named after its founder, Dante Rivetti, who comes from a family with a long history in winemaking. The Rivetti family has been cultivating vineyards and producing wines in the Piedmont region for generations. Dante Rivetti took the reins of the winery and continued the family's winemaking traditions, focusing on crafting high-quality wines that showcase the unique characteristics of the region's terroir and grape varieties. The vintage of 1997 is generally considered a good year for wines in the Piedmont region. If you come across this wine, I'd recommend doing some research or seeking expert opinions to determine its current quality and value, especially if you see it offered as an opportunity or investment. Capitoni Riserva 2019: The colour is medium ruby. On the nose prunes and stewed fruits. In the mouth soft and warm, probably mainly due to the 15% alcohol. The aftertaste is rather short. This wine is made with 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot grapes under the Orcia DOC denomination. The Orcia vineyard areas sit in the south-east of Tuscany, between the districts of Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and covers the largest surface of any DOC in Tuscany. Inaugurated on Valentine’s Day of the year 2000, it is also among the youngest DOCs of Tuscany and is yet to earn itself prestige. As in the other denominations of Tuscany, Sangiovese is the leading variety in Orcia DOC as well. It must account for a minimum of 60% of the blend. To qualify as a Riserva, a Orcia wine must be aged a minimum of 24 months, of which at least 12 in oak barrels. For this bottle I paid 18 EUR directly at the winery, when I visited it in Pienza during last year’s All Saints Holidays.

Wednesday Wines – Episode 161 – Château Figeac, Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A   Blandine de Brier Manoncourt Figeac is a remarkable wine estate, and the 2022 vintage (which you8 can read about in my 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur Report) marks the 130th year in which the Manoncourt family has owned this noble Château.  Figeac is close to the Saint-Emilion / Pomerol border and has a curious mix of terroirs.  Unusual in Saint-Emilion, this property has gravel hills and vineyards full of flint and quartz as well as clay and sandy ironstone.  There is only 6ha of gravel soil in the 5400ha in greater Saint-Emilion, which explains why the Cabernet Sauvignon grape features so prominently in Figeac’s wines.  As a rule of thumb, Figeac sports a 1/3s blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.  This means that no matter what happens during the growing season, these wines always have an enviable degree of inbuilt complexity. Inniskillin Merlot Reserve 2020: The colour is medium ruby. On the nose black cherries, plumbs and black tea. In the mouth not very structured, with a bitter finish. The aftertaste is short. This Merlot based wine is made by Inniskillin, Canada’s first estate winery. Although established only in 1975, it is the oldest continuously operating winery in Canada. In this respect, it needs to be noted that after the repeal of alcohol prohibition in 1927, the Canadian provinces strictly limited the number of licences to produce wine. A nearly 50-year moratorium on issuing new winery licences was dropped only in 1974. The first winery licence was granted on July 31, 1975 to Inniskillin winery. For its Reserve Series, Inniskillin sources the grapes from specific vineyards throughout the Niagara Peninsula. Canada doesn’t have any indigenous red grape variety. Besides Icewine, Canada’s winemaking doesn’t have much of an identity neither. Most major international red grapes are cultivated, especially the classic Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Malbec and Carmenere (also from Bordeaux), Pinot Noir and Gamay from Burgundy, and Syrah from the Rhône Valley are also grown. For this bottle I paid 29.95 CAD (20 CHF) at Wine Rack in Toronto.
