SIFA 2023 Crew of NEW ILLUSION, by Toshiki Okada/chelfitsch (JP) @SOTA Studio Theatre. NEW-ILLUSION is the latest in a series manifesting chelfitsch’s innovative theatre style EIZO-Theater, which creates a unique performance space comprising life-size projected images of performances that interplay with the physical space and give rise to dynamic illusions. The content of the images is illusory: it is not quite present in the performance space – and yet, it is. Projected images of a man and a woman begin talking about a play that was performed in the theatre, a play set in the room where they had lived together. But is what the two are talking about fiction or reality? As the fictional, projected space on screen and the real space of the theatre encroach on each other, the audience senses the presence of actors that are not supposed to be there. Reality and fiction, present and past, and existence and absence overlap on the stage. A new illusion created by EIZO-Theater comes into view through the subtle gaps between these dichotomies.

Celebrating World Theatre Day. Remembering that theatre is so much bigger than Broadway. I am at once humbled and proud to belong to a community of collaborative artists in every nation. Most of whom don't have the budgets, resources or wages of Broadway but tell their stories anyway. I believe story telling in community matters. Here is the WTD 2024 Message by Jon Fosse of Norway which really resonated with me. Like the author, I believe that art should not erase differences but bring them into light so we can learn to empathize with what is alien to us. That is how we transcend and transform. Art, good art, manages in its wonderful way to combine the utterly unique with the universal. It lets us understand what is different—what is foreign, you might say—as being universal. By doing so, art breaks through the boundaries between languages, geographical regions, countries. It brings together not just everyone’s individual qualities but also, in another sense, the individual characteristics of every group of people, for example of every nation. Art does this not by levelling differences and making everything the same, but, on the contrary, by showing us what is different from us, what is alien or foreign. All good art contains precisely that: something alien, something we cannot completely understand and yet at the same time do understand, in a way. It contains a mystery, so to speak. Something that fascinates us and thus pushes us beyond our limits and in so doing creates the transcendence that all art must both contain in itself and lead us to.

The pandemic has measurably disrupted the way we gather and celebrate the arts and theatre. As costs of living escalates, we now must also contend with this effect on audiences behaviour. I’m struck that theatre is an artform that continues to evolve since the Ancient Greeks. It continues to adapt and incorporates new technologies, while also responding to societal changes. Yet, what does emerging from the endemic mean for creators and companies? How does the theatre rebuild or remain relevant to audiences? If looking ahead to 2030, how have the artists, the stories, the business models and spaces supporting theatre evolved?

What if theatre plays were presented like the lineup of a festival? At Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, we challenged tradition and reimagined the way we introduce our new season. Here's how we did it: - We drew inspiration from the moment of sunrise, symbolizing anticipation and new beginnings, aligning perfectly with the essence of our upcoming season. - Instead of following the conventional theatre narrative, we embraced a fresh approach by presenting our plays as if they were part of a festival lineup. - Our focus shifted from individual performances to showcasing the spectacular essence of each play, creating an immersive experience for our audience. We stepped out of the spotlight and introduced a novel format and transformed the upcoming season into a multisensory delight, captivating the audience in new and exciting ways. Today is World Theatre Day. Since 1962 World Theatre Day has been celebrated by International theater organizations, theater professionals, and theater lovers all over the world on the 27th of March. This year, the International Theatre Institute is privileged to have Jon Fosse, the Norwegian playwright and novelist, and last year's Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature, crafting the Message for World Theatre Day 2024. 🚀 Day 50 of the #75HardCodingChallenge - Problem 1/2: "Theatre Square" 🪧 The grand Theatre Square in the capital city of Berland is getting a makeover for the city's anniversary. The Square has a rectangular shape of n × m meters. The challenge at hand is to pave it with square granite flagstones, each of size a × a. The question is, what's the minimum number of flagstones needed to cover the entire Theatre Square? 🧩🪚 The approach unfolds as follows: 1. Input: Start by taking input for the dimensions of the Theatre Square (n and m) and the flagstone size (a). 2. Calculate Rows and Columns: To minimize the number of flagstones, we calculate the number of rows and columns required. The number of rows (l) is determined by dividing n by the flagstone size (a), and if there's a remainder (n % a), we add one to account for the partial row. The same logic applies to the number of columns (r). 3. Handling Edge Cases: If the calculations result in 0 rows or 0 columns (which can happen when n or m are less than a), we ensure that at least one row and one column are considered. 4. Calculate Total Flagstones: The total number of flagstones (ans) is obtained by multiplying the number of rows (l) and columns (r). 5. Output: The final answer is printed, which represents the minimum number of flagstones needed to pave Theatre Square efficiently.
