A look behind the scenes of the Aquadome on #IconoftheSeas! The dome was assembled on the grounds of the shipyard adjacent to the ship. After all steel and glass panels were placed, it was flown to its final location at the front of the ship by the shipyard’s 1200-ton gantry crane. Truly a momentous and heart-pounding occasion. We worked very closely with the engineering expertise of Meyer Turku and Novum Structures to design a structure that did not require any interior pillars. The lack of pillars created a grand, open interior with unobstructed views. Although counter-intuitive, the lack of pillars reduces the transferred vibrations from the ship and allowed for the size of the dome's structural members to be decreased. A pillar-free space with a sleek structural dome also resulted in maximum views. Images 2 & 3: Janne-Petteri Kumpulainen Images 5: Sami Mäkinen Alastair T. Battson A. It was such a honor to have the opportunity to contribute to the design of this amazing structure with the WBA team!
I saw the new dome for the next ship under construction yesterday, absolutely amazing - and the care and planning required to lift that whole structure in to place on the ship when built 👏
Thanks very much to Novum Structures for letting Ariño Duglass, being the glazing partner of the Aquadome!! Iconic project indeed
It was hard enough to move half the dome at 1-50 let alone the whole thing at 1-1. ;-) An exemplar of Epic.
I love this as I read through the details with my jaw on the floor. Amazing!
Amazing work! Kudos to all involved for making it happen
Talk about a feat of modern engineering! This is incredible!!!
Well done Chad and the team!
So amazing. When do I get a ride?😀
