Important day and a strong message delivered across the Maritime and Defence Industry. An improvement of the lived experience is desperately needed to encourage more personnel to join a thriving and exhilarating sector. Government’s 2050 Maritime Strategy is for 30% of the workforce to be female. Currently most organisations struggle to see double figures (standfast Royal Navy). We still struggle to see inclusion across the workforce with women frequently seen as being ‘less’ or a ‘nuisance’ through wishing for both family life and careers. The two are not mutually exclusive. I was one of those in my 20s who felt I just wanted to get on with my job and that everyone should be treated equally without getting involved in female specific organisations. I didn’t want to rock the boat and threw scorn on those who did. Now I am the one with humble pie finding myself with both childcare and career requirements. In the UK Merchant Navy >92% identify as white British male, more work needs to be done. I am proud of the work I do within the RFA as well as what I achieve in my seagoing career. It is better to inspire, empower and promote inclusion across the workforce to be stronger together.

Prioritizing the Culture of Service, What Lessons can be Taught from Military Service at Navy League of the United States’ #SeaAirSpace 2024 Sailor life offers unrivaled opportunities for young Americans seeking purpose and adventure, but such personal fulfillment is only possible amidst a service-wide culture of respect, duty, professionalism, and service to others. This extends beyond those in uniform, to include strong support for spouses and children. It also extends beyond the length of one’s time in service, as each Sailor, Marine, and Sentinel is expected to maintain the integrity and strength of character developed while in uniform even after transitioning out of service. How does America develop the greatest Sailors, Marines, and Sentinels in the world and how will we continue to do so? We heard from the senior enlisted members of these renowned sea services and learned about the tireless work they undertake to ensure that the quality of our servicemembers remain the envy of the world. 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁: After commissioning from a military academy, you must serve a five-year Active Duty Service Obligation (ADSO), and if you received a Dedicated Guard ROTC Scholarship you must serve a four-year ADSO before you can start qualifying for the Post-9/11 Gi Bill.

A really good long form article (with data) illustrating the tension at Service academies between the need for diverse perspectives in their officer corps and systems that often disadvantage the diverse individuals. While this tension is seen in the experiences of the socio-economically diverse and prior enlisted (both apply to me), it is most acute for racial diversity because it is an ever-visible part of a students identity. The academy prep schools like the United States Military Academy Preparatory School provide immense value by improving the access to and success of these more of these diverse populations. However, the core quantitative “meritocracy” of the academies present inherent challenges evidenced by the data in this article. The article sums up the challenges of quantifying every aspect of “merit” for officer candidates: “Owens has expressed concern that cadets are too often treated as numbers: their GPA or class rankings that determine who gets coveted assignments such as a place in flight school…But I've been talked down to more because of my class rank than because I'm a Black man." Happy 248th Birthday to our US Navy! Unlike the US Marine Corps’ Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful), the U.S. Navy technically does not have an official motto, and there are even disagreements over what its unofficial motto might be. Some sources claim that the unofficial motto is “Non sibi sed patriae” – Latin for “Not self, but country,” a phrase inscribed above the chapel doors of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. This unofficial motto invokes the spirit of sacrifice that so many sailors and members of our Armed Forces carry with them through their service. Some incorrectly assume that the title of the unofficial song of the U.S. Navy, “Anchors Aweigh,” is its motto, which it is not. Other sources claim that “Semper Fortis” – Latin for “Always Courageous” – is the Navy’s unofficial motto; considering that the Navy was founded in the 18th century, when sailing in a Navy required venturing out into the unknown of the vast oceans, some still uncharted, this emphasis on courage seems fitting. Regardless of which unofficial motto is truly the one, today, the U.S. Navy continues to stand by all of these unofficial mottos’ ideals and fearlessly serves the United States both at home and abroad.
