Yesterday, Public Policy Projects held a roundtable on #AI in Imaging Diagnostics. One particular point has been on my mind since then, and it has only been reinforced by today's news that NHS waiting lists have hit another record high. For any health innovation to be effective, clinical input into design and functionality is essential. Most companies recognize this and have medical advisory boards. But the current situation in the NHS means that clinicians are stretched to their absolute maximum capacity and have little time for anything else, be it advising companies on their products or driving implementation on the ground. The PM has said that cutting NHS waiting lists is one of his five priorities in 2023, but things continue to head in the wrong direction. This is going to have a negative impact on future health innovations and technologies. Many clinicians are running out of time to advise companies on their products. Likewise, fewer clinicians will drive innovation in the workplace when they are overwhelmed with their immediate responsibilities. While the large, well-resourced companies will probably be fine, SMEs and start-ups will struggle to design products that are clinically useful. Clinicians are so often driven by a sense of duty to help others, so when the lights are always flashing red and the system is in a constant state of catch-up, more and more clinicians will be reluctant to step away from the day job. Record waiting times are of course bad for short-term health outcomes and employee satisfaction. But the downstream effects will also begin to emerge through uninformed technologies and products and/or a workforce unable to implement new solutions. 𝐁𝐓 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐀𝐈 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫.   The NHS is suffering a decrease in the number of skilled healthcare workers and this has caused an inevitable reliance on outsourcing. BT partnered with AI platform deepc and is collaborating with Axon Diagnostics with the aim of reducing the NHS's reliance on outsourcing and increasing patient flow while addressing the existing patient backlog.   Research conducted by BT has provided insights into the opinions of digital health, It has shown that 65% of adults believe the technology is a worthwhile investment in the NHS and 91% of patients want shorter wait times, and quicker diagnosis services - with most welcoming the use of advanced technology to achieve this.     Deepc is a radiology AI platform for medical professionals to access AI tools through an AI marketplace. It offers access to more than 50 third-party AI solutions for adoption at scale. Axon Diagnostics provides a digital platform for faster diagnosis and image sharing, allowing specialists worldwide to access and report live diagnostic information through a secure streaming service. The partnership will give NHS physicians seamless access to advanced AI-driven insights in medical imaging enabling more informed decisions for patients with reduced wait times.   However, the report published by BT also found that the NHS's infrastructure would need to evolve and require significant improvement to support digital transformation. Approximately 97% of respondents in the research study agreed that the networks; Wi-Fi infrastructure and mobile technologies were "critical to future innovations in the delivery of healthcare" - and a large proportion (58%) said that they suffered from building non-spots and that they had to switch between devices to carry out tasks.   As with any organisation's transformation towards digital connectivity, there will be difficulties in implementing new advanced technologies within the existing system.
