What Your Bottle Choice Says About You! When building your brand, the choice in bottles can be often left to last but it informs so much about your product; from label design, to closure type and even outer case design. But one of the biggest faux pas I've encountered over the last ten years in whiskey, is people not checking with their bottling partners whether their bottle can go down the line or not, before making their branding decisions.... or worse yet, before commissioning a bespoke bottle! 😲 #irishwhiskey #privatelabel

New research from Texas Christian University's Neely School of Business highlights when consumers prefer simple packaging and when they don’t. In short, there are advantages to using simple packaging for name-brand and healthy products and design-heavy packaging for store brands and anything that might be considered tasty or indulgent. The key is that “Brands need to align the visual design with the actual ingredients.” Corrugated's natural and infinitely brandable surface can fit the bill no matter which message you want to convey. Looks simple. But it’s just outstanding! Love this design, especially the (breakable) label which holds multiple units together. ‘The iconic cylindrical design practically unchanged for 68 years. Changing and reshaping the Smarties package has been a careful process, carried out in close collaboration between Nestlé units in Germany and the UK.’ "The new hexagonal shape clearly has a modern touch and feel, and it makes the package more dynamic and interesting to consumers," says Christin Hermann , Manager of Confectionery Product Coordination at Nestlé Germany's Export Division. "Consumers benefit from the re-closable flip-top opening system that can be operated with one hand. There is also a new portioning system that drops just one or two candies at a time - so the Smarties won't spill onto the floor even if the package is turned upside down," Christin Hermann explains. Everything made from cartonboard Material aspects also speak in favor of the new hexagonal or six-sided pack. "This is a monomaterial package made from Neocart carton without an additional plastic lid. Packaging that doubles as storage is very clever.

Don't mess with my cuppa. I'm all in favour of Tetley's move to more sustainable packaging. Changing pack like that is a serious undertaking. But I'm sad that the new pack - from visual to verbal identity - feels like a departure from the friendly, cheery brand I loved. That sense of welcoming warmth has stepped aside in favour of a more traditional-but-friendly, heritage feel. It's not bad, exactly. It's just a bit bland. The copy has that professional-but-friendly tone that every other client thinks they want. No more "blended til it's lovely". Now we have "for the love of taste" and "only the best leaves make the grade" (although curiously, given the focus on taste, the new packs no longer sport a Great Taste Award logo). And then there's an out-of-place fun moment with "Gaffer approved" inside the lid. It all feels a bit odd. Tea-making me feels confused. And she's very much hoping that the refreshed brand beds in and finds its feet before too long. #packagingdesign #rebrand #brandvoice
