ON ASSIGNMENT: On this day, The Alexander String Quartet commissioned me to make a cover photograph for their “Retrospections” album at San Francisco’s Anchor Steam Brewery in Potrero Hill. It was kind of mesmerizing watching all those beer bottles zoom by on the assembly line. Absolutely beautiful light too, and the machinery, fixtures and infrastructure throughout the facility were all pure eye candy. Oh yeah, and it was also spotlessly clean. I’ve never seen such a clean industrial facility, and I had a great time while I was there. So, yesterday I learned that this 127 year old business is going to be permanently closing their operation by the end of July. It’s really sad news for one of the oldest craft breweries in the U.S.. The economic pressures of the pandemic were a huge hit for Anchor Steam as their core distribution model had always been centered in bars and taprooms, which were all closed during Covid. Anchor Steam was hoping that the brewery could redirect their core distribution to grocery stores, but they were late to that distribution model and the increased competition for shelf space could not be overcome with the resources available. They are hoping that someone will see the closure as an opportunity to invest in Anchor Steam Brewing, and breathe new life into this iconic brand. Fingers crossed. Which Are the Best BBQ Cities in America? Home-cooked barbecue is not just a holiday tradition. Barbecuing has rapidly become a popular American pastime. Surveys suggest 80% of American homeowners own a grill or smoker. It is estimated that Americans spent $6.1 billion on grills and grilling accessories in 2021. Much of that is due to the growing popularity of barbecue contests. The world’s largest competition is “The World Series of Barbecue,” held in Kansas City, Missouri, with 500 teams competing and 70,000 spectators. Which cities have the best barbecue?
