Incredible moment at CHCW yesterday, as the PCBH team finished out a record breaking month regarding number of visits and handoffs. In total, the team set all-time records by completing 1,422 visits and 530 same-day/warm-handoffs. These visits and handoffs aren't meet & greets, rather, they are radical moments that gather a patient's context and provide a contextually-relevant and compassionate intervention that ripples out beyond the humans in the visit. As we discuss regularly in emails and team meetings, numbers and metrics are cool to discuss and breaking records produces "warm & fuzzy" moments. And, metrics/records are never and will never be the goal. Instead, they are reflections of our program's infinite values. This isn’t about visits, this is about moments; this isn’t about finances, this is about healing; this isn’t about records, this is about love; this isn’t about individuals, this is about an incredible, talented, and unrelenting team and community. And... still... we crushed our all-time records!!! Pumped to see what the rest of the year produces!!!

In March 2022, BCHS received a planning grant from Ontario’s Ministry of Health to begin the work required to submit a redevelopment proposal for both Brantford General Hospital (BGH) and The Willett, Paris. The redevelopment proposal outlines the work required to transform our oldest hospital buildings to meet the needs of our patients and community well into the future. Some of our hospital buildings are well over 50 years old and make it difficult for our qualified health care professionals to do their jobs in providing the care and help residents deserve and need. The early planning, as outlined in the Ministry’s hospital capital planning process, includes a Pre-Capital submission, a Proposal submission, and the completion of a Functional Program – three stages. After extensive consultation and planning, the hospital’s Redevelopment team submitted the detailed Proposal submission (over 600 pages of information) to the Ministry of Health, Capital Branch and Ontario Health (Southwest), on October 30. UHN in Toronto moved from 4th to 3rd best hospital in the world, just behind #Mayoclinic and #clevelandclinic. What an amazing achievement… There are many insights that come to mind at the moment, but would like to share just one, which fills me with hope: I’ve been lucky enough to have worked for almost 10 years at 2 of the top 3 hospitals in the world (Mayo and UHN). Completely different organizations, mindset, processes, social/national circumstances, etc. Just completely different in almost any way. But both capable of achieving excellence at the highest level. Never think excellence is impossible! Bringing top-notch care options closer to residents is critical to access and changes how many will experience treatment in the area. It means less cost to patients who travel out of town and pay for overnight stays. It means actually getting the care you deserve for those who are not able to overcome geographical and financial barriers to care in their region. For those working in rad-onc or planning to, and are from the area, you are getting a brand new facility as an option for your career. You can reconsider having to move away from your relatives to get the best job in your field. A trusted name and the best minds in the field are now in your backyard. This will drive oncology professionals to the region for better cost of living, housing, and research opportunities. Taking discoveries down the deployment track requires an unbreakable human chain linking all of the skills necessary for the journey. The strength of that chain is not however is not just in the diversity of skills it is in how they are integrated through a collegial and collaborative approach that engenders trust in each other. Translation through connectivity ! I will share some thoughts on how this might be achieved in the modern era of research.

I’m attending the 2023 ADvancing States HCBS Conference virtually this week, and it was great to learn about the latest trends and best practices in HCBS. Last year, I asked someone at the HHCN Future Conference in New York what their favorite conference was in 2022, and he told me ADvancing States HCBS Conference. I’m glad to attend in this cool virtual format through EventsAir, and I’ve learned so much. I highly recommend attending and look forward to attending in person next year. Key learnings: States are facing challenges in meeting the needs of people receiving home and community based services, including staffing shortages, rising costs, and regulatory barriers; there is a growing emphasis on using technology to improve the delivery of HCBS; states are increasingly collaborating with each other to share resources and best practices.
