Where is Lina Khan and why hasn’t Congress initiated impeachment proceedings against her? We should absolutely congratulate her for the likely destruction of Spirit Airlines (blocking JetBlue’s attempt to acquire a company that will now probably go bankrupt) and iRobot (by Amazon). Or perhaps trying to deny Microsoft the acquisition of Activision Blizzard for no legitimate reason other than the fact that Microsoft is big, and therefore in her mind, bad. Or perhaps we should enroll her in economics 101 so she would understand why every retailer on the planet promotes their own private labels at the expense of national brands while she accuses Amazon of violating the law for doing just that. But, out of curiosity, is she even aware of Novo Nordisk’s proposed acquisition of Catalent, and the potential damage that acquisition could do to Eli Lilly and Company and other American companies who rely on Catalent, not only for supply chain, but also for operations? Does she not get that her job is to prevent restraint of trade and not competition, which the Novo acquisition will be, but Amazon private labels are not. Seems to me that her focus is more on career advancement than consumer protection. [get the tea because this is gonna be a long and sentimental post; this is not a post about award-winning, but…] I’ve never received so many awards in my entire life as I did this week: EMEA SMB Customer Engineering Quartile Performance, CE Impact (both for being the top performer this quarter), EMEA Culture and Inclusion, and Q2 Inclusion Award (both for my efforts on driving diversity and inclusion). This got me thinking about the power of change. One year ago I was a 3rd-year PhD student. Being a researcher was my dream for a long long time —I had my career entirely planned for at least 10 years after the PhD. This was until I realized that what once was my dream just… didn’t make sense anymore. What a scary feeling. It took a lot of courage (and therapy) for me to understand that it is OK to change plans, take a leap of faith (on yourself) and try something new. I took this leap of faith when I joined the Customer Engineering team at Google. I had no previous experience in the area, but I had people that believed in me a lot of excitement. And I can tell you: I’m so glad I did this move! As someone that suffers with impostor syndrome, sometimes I can’t believe things ACTUALLY worked out and that now, 10 months since I started this new job, I’m being recognized for my work. I can’t thank my team and my managers enough for being so kind, supportive, and creating an environment where everyone belongs. I know I’m not the only one that felt like that. So this is for you that are unhappy with your career, feeling like you’re not good at anything and everything is wrong: hang on tight and don’t be afraid to change. Sometimes we are just insisting on things that do not make sense anymore. Believe in yourself, great things can come from where we least expect them! P.S.: by the way, we are #hiring 😊
