Check out this new post written by the amazing Michael G. Stroud!
Ulysses S. Grant cut his teeth in the American West, but it would be his move to the East where his reputation would truly take hold. Following the Union defeat at Chickamauga in September 1863 they pulled back to the transportation hub that was Chattanooga where the cantankerous Confederate General Braxton Bragg laid siege, hoping to starve them into submission. Grant would have other plans. Read Michael G. Stroud's new post here https://lnkd.in/ewmjS6dq

Healthcare/Tech Executive, CEO, Infodemiologist, Publisher, Editor, Health Innovator, Open Science Disruptor, Professor
Very sad - JMIR Publications is now pretty much the last small/medium sized full independent OA publisher left standing. I wonder if it dawns on Coalition S funders and librarians that getting rid of institutional open access funds (which equally support OA publishing across publishers without "read and publish deals" with select publishers that have legacy paywall content) and throwing all their available budget at legacy publishers may have been a mistake? I predicted it in 2020: "What librarians do with transformative agreements (...) is to cement the existing monopolies/oligarchies in publishing, stifling innovation, and reducing diversity in the publishing market. In the next couple of years, you will see a rapid decline of full open access publishers, who will all be acquired by large legacy publishers." (https://lnkd.in/gASPfdvj). I wish the marketing blurbs from PeerJ on why it was sold would have been clearer on this.

Today, we recognize the enduring legacy of A. Philip Randolph. As a tireless champion for equality and justice, he brought a monumental shift in the workplace and paved the way for generations of Black workers. Black History In the Workplace: ✊🏽 A. Philip Randolph, a civil rights activist and labor leader, founded the first well-known Black labor union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), in 1925. The union addressed the poor working conditions and low wages of the African American men who served white passengers aboard luxury railroad sleeping cars. ✊🏽 BSCP was the first Black union to be granted a charter by the American Federation of Labor (AFL). In 1934, Congress amended the Railway Labor Act to cover porters in sleeping cars. The new legislation reduced their monthly work hours and raised their wages. ✊🏽 Randolph's advocacy was instrumental in the forming of the Fair Employment Practice Commission (FEPC) and the Universal Military Service and Training Act, which desegregated the U.S. armed forces. ✊🏽 In 1963, Randolph organized with activist Bayard Rustin to spearhead the March on Washington, which paved the way for the 1964 Civil Rights Act. 💡Want to learn more about creating healthy and inclusive workplaces? 👤 In this edition of The POV, Konrad S. examines the professional history and presidential candidacy of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. His politics has continually sparked debate in a deeply polarised American election. Szumiński argues that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. emerges as a significant independent candidate due to his illustrious family background and contentious stance on vaccines. Despite his controversial views, Szumiński contends that Kennedy Jr.'s environmental activism and legal work demonstrate a commitment to change despite his polarising opinions, especially on vaccines, have alienated some voters. Yet, Szumiński believes Kennedy Jr. could attract disillusioned voters seeking an alternative to the current political dichotomy, positioning him as a potentially serious contender in the 2024 US election. #robertfkennedy #RFKjr #USA #2024election #uspolitics https://lnkd.in/e9UJMCj9

Working a lot with US clients, I have been sympathising with them about the turn of the year. Because 2024 is an election year, and the vitriol and division are already beginning ahead of the vote in November. I sympathise with them because it looks like they have the same choice as last time: Biden or Trump. It was an uninspiring choice last time and it looks even worse this time. It's my naive hope that a shining hero is going to come over the horizon soon and offer something better. Someone like a Kennedy figure who looks and sounds like a leader (and no, not the actual Kennedy who is going to run this year). When John Fitzgerald Kennedy was elected in 1960, he became a symbol of the decade of change that the 60s would become. His speeches were optimistic and aspirational, and if Martin Luther King didn't exist, it would probably be one of his speeches that would've won the title of speech of the 20th Century. You might not agree with Kennedy's policies, or his transgressions in his personal life, but you've got to admit the man had style. JFK had a trademark delivery and clever wordplay that set him apart from not just other US Presidents, but other speakers in history. The speech where this is usually remembered most is his inauguration speech in 1961. You can hear his Massachusetts accent in your head as you read the line: "Ask not what your country can do for you...". But the speech is more than just that line. What makes it such a memorable and admired speech? I have broken down the speech in an analysis video, outlining the different factors that make this such an engaging speech. I also gave myself the challenging task of trying to offer some suggestions that would've made the speech even better. I'm pleased with the few I managed to come up with! Watch this video to learn how to deliver one of the speeches of the century. #publicspeaking #speeches #leadership
