Leadership Reflection: Happy Presidents' Day! This is a day that, when I was a kid, was for President Washington's Birthday, and we also had a separate day for President Lincoln's Birthday. It was then combined to Presidents' Day and went on to honor all past and current United States Presidents (there have been a total of 46 since 1789). For this day, I would like to go the quote from the 34th President of the United States and decorated Five-Star General of the Army, Dwight D. Eisenhower. He hit on a theme I often discuss when talking about leadership. It isn't about going from point A to point B as much as what is learned on the journey between the two points. Therein lies the accomplishment - what was gained along the way through all the obstacles, challenges, and difficulties, like wisdom. Accountability starts with you. George Washington, the first President of the United States of America, whose birthday happens to be today, knew this for sure. Here’s a quick story in his honor: One day during the American Revolutionary War, General Washington rode up to a group of soldiers attempting to raise a massive oak beam high above the ground. The corporal in charge was shouting encouragement, but the soldiers just couldn’t get the beam into position. Washington asked the corporal why he didn’t help. “Don’t you realize that I am the corporal?” he replied. Very politely, General Washington responded, “I beg your pardon, Mr. Corporal, I do.” Washington then dismounted his horse and joined the soldiers himself, helping to hoist the beam. When they finished, he said, “If you should need help again, call on Washington, your commander-in-chief, and I will come.” Like General Washington, the most effective leaders I’ve met lead by example and walk their own talk; they’re accountable. So, ask yourself, “Am I leading by example?” But don’t take your own word for it! Also check in with a coach, a mastermind group, or a trusted colleague to determine whether you’re truly walking your own talk as a leader. #Accountability #Leadership #LeadByExample #GeorgeWashington

When writing the book, The Power of Being All In, I had the privilege of interviewing General Martin Dempsey, the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In the interview, we delved into the significant leadership challenges he observed emerging since 2017; not just in the military, but across various sectors. We spoke about the erosion of trust in institutions and how building trust becomes a fundamental leadership imperative. We both agree that leaders must actively work to foster transparency, integrity, and competence so as to cultivate trust within their organizations. General Dempsey also reflected on the underestimation of how vulnerable individuals would be to the erosion of trust and how political polarization could negatively impact the perception of the military. "Leaders," he said, "need to be forward-thinking and consider the potential downstream effects of their decisions and external trends." Interviewing General Dempsey for The Power of Being All In was a privilege and a terrific learning experience for me.
