FVV BEST OF 2023 #6 – Modern Synthesis x Ganni A/S "Bou" Bag What we know about bacteria seems to change all the time; not just what it does, but – perhaps more importantly – what we can do with it. Case in point: a reworked version of Ganni A/S's "Bou" bag, usually made from a mix of materials including #recycled leather and polyurethane, constructed instead from bacterial nanocellulose developed by Modern Synthesis. The bag is a showcase not just for the potential applications bacteria across fashion and footwear, but also for what's possible when it comes to swapping out animal-derived and fossil-based elements from the manufacturing process. Yes, the bag was a prototype, a one-of-one product, but it's indicative of the work being doing – by innovators on the materials end and by progress-minded brands like Ganni A/S – to reshape the industry, piece by piece, in a way that puts the planet first. "You hear a lot of companies these days have these far off targets, and the reality is, they don't really know how they're going to achieve them," she argued, but from Allbirds' very first shoe -- that iconic Wool Runner -- they've been laser-focused on sustainability, calculating the #carbonfootprint of their products from day one. Lerch believes every company should do the same: "The thing that has to happen with this carbon footprint labeling is, it needs to be commonplace, everyone needs to be doing it." - MIT's Fabric Innovation Hub manager, Yuly Fuentes-Medel Ph.D., initiated a collective effort by eight footwear brands to address sustainability challenges in the industry. These challenges arise from the complexity of shoe production and the lack of consensus on sustainable practices. - The Footwear Collective, under the nonprofit EarthDNA aims to forge collaboration among brands like On, New Balance, Target, Crocs, Brooks Running, Reformation, ECCO and Vibram Group to develop and scale circular materials and infrastructure, while influencing consumer behavior, marking a pioneering effort in the footwear sector. This week EarthDNA’s The Footwear Collective (TFC) officially launched and we’re proud to be one of the eight founding companies joining. EarthDNA is led by experts in the aerospace industry, science, academia, policy, and industry, and with The Footwear Collective, it’s bringing this knowledge together with brands from the footwear industry to drive a collaborative, circular approach to footwear consumption. Kicking off in Boston, the group has already delved into sessions together on key struggles facing the industry around #circularity and will continue to share resources, practices, and information to accelerate the process and create a scalable impact. So, what does this mean for our team? “Our shared vision is to build a sustainable future for the footwear industry on the foundation of circular economy. Laser-focused, action-driven, pragmatic,” says Head of Innovation Business Strategy François-Xavier Dosne, who is representing On in the cohort along with Georg Singer, who brings Reverse Logistics & Recycling expertise, and Kati (Scronce) Larson from our Global Sales team. "It’s an honor to collaborate with this group that offers a rare opportunity to leverage our varied viewpoints, experiences, and abilities to address intricate sustainability and circularity challenges. At the end of October, COSE361 (our sister company from Qualith) attended the durability bootcamp of the PEF for Apparel and Footwear in Paris and represented the Alliance for European Flax and Linen as well as the Durhabi project led by IFTH 🌍 Since 2020, together with COSE361, we have been involved in the harmonization of environmental footprint measurement at the European level (PEF/PEFCR). Very interesting discussions took place with fashion industry representatives, LCA experts, and the French Ministry of Environment during this event regarding: → Intrinsic durability: the methodology to assess the physical dimension of a garment's lifetime → Extrinsic/emotional durability: the methodology to assess the non-physical dimension of a garment's lifetime → Repairability: the criteria to assess garment repairability → Microplastics: how to measure products’ leakage and impact on the environment These discussions will strengthen the sector's newest product environmental footprint rules due to enter into a second public consultation in Q1 of 2024. We extend our gratitude to the CGDD - Commissariat général au développement durable and the French Ministry of the Environment for hosting this event and for their unwavering dedication to environmental preservation and innovation. It's urgent that the fashion sector gets a standardized methodology to assess its environmental impacts. Synthesising, therefore, does not mean simplifying, but uniting and refining ideas to reach a deeper and more meaningful understanding, to create something new. Every element, from the sole to the upper, from waterproof and breathable fabrics to laces, is combined to create a product that is more than the sum of its parts.
