New for 2024, we’re introducing a regular column featuring our brilliant director of landscape engineering and sustainable drainage Lisa Sawyer – and her adorable dog Reggie. Lisa and Reggie will be out and about in the North West looking at sustainable drainage systems to get people thinking about and learning from drainage features which have been constructed. Lisa, who bought Reggie as a puppy a year ago, said: “Most people don’t know what they’re for or how important they are to managing water on and off a site. SuDS are often designed as a standalone feature within a site instead of being designed holistically with the input of other disciplines such as ecology and landscape architecture. “They’re a collection of important water management practices that align natural water processes with modern drainage systems and, at Land Studio, we use them as part of a larger green infrastructure strategy. “In the last few weeks, I think we’ve all been shocked by the dramatic flooding footage as river levels rise and our climate changes. “It made me think about how we get the best out of a layout of a site, how we work with its topography and how we provide multifunctional and accessible SuDS features. “Reggie absolutely loves going for walks so I’ll often combine one with a trip to a SuDS feature. “We’re going to be looking at lots of different examples, the good, the bad and the ugly, and considering how they deal with water flow and if there could have been a better way to incorporate them to give accessible amenity space and biodiversity benefits. “We’d love to hear from our readers too about what they think of the SuDS features they spot and how they could be improved.” * Do send us your SuDS photos and views or let us know if you'd like to be added to our monthly newsletter packed with news and views - just email info@landstudio-uk.com #suds #drainage #dog #dogsoflinkedin #biodiversity #water #engineeringexcellence #ecology #landscapearchitecture Kate Richards Simon Richards Val Gateley

The message we convey in this technical report is central to forest landscape restoration #FLR endeavors, whether approached from top-down or bottom-up.
Forest landscape restoration is about people. It is people who carry out restoration, people take decisions around restoration, people use restoration to their advantage. Human history affects restoration. Rules that affect how restoration is implemented take place in the human system. Relations between those people with less power and those with more power affect the outcomes of restoration. And restoration outcomes impact on people. These are just some of the many human dimensions of forest landscape restoration explored in this report "Human dimensions of forest landscape restoration" which is intended to support both practitioners and policymakers. #GenerationRestoration #UNdecaderestoration https://lnkd.in/eSDMhYHu

A report by the California State Parks Foundation warned that rising sea levels could carve away 75% of the state’s beaches by the year 2100. 🌊 But, that doesn't have to be the reality. Implementing sustainable coastal defense strategies such as landscape architecture and strategic engineering can fortify our beaches and prevent erosion caused by rising sea levels and intensifying storm surges. With unique techniques in our tool belt like living shorelines, which utilize natural materials and vegetation to dissipate wave energy, we can effectively safeguard coastal communities while promoting ecological diversity. How are you working to protect shorelines and prevent erosion with creative landscape architecture services? Check out what we can do here: https://hubs.la/Q02x_wqc0 #InterwestConsulting #LandscapeArchitecture #CivilEngineering #PublicWorks #DisasterMitigation #CoastalPreservation

Do you struggle to monitor the real impacts of your landscape restoration work? To show how it has long-term natural, social, or financial and inspirational benefits? Accurately monitoring landscape restoration activities can be difficult, especially if the indicators you are using don’t reflect what’s happening in the field. However, without monitoring data, you can’t provide evidence of the impact landscape restoration has on the ground – on nature, local communities, and the economy. Evidence is essential for different things, for example adjusting your activities, making restoration projects “investable” – or influencing policy and financial frameworks to support nature restoration. Commonland has partnered with Wetlands International and Landscape Finance Lab to develop a monitoring framework tailored to monitor the 4 Returns: the 4Returns indicator menu. This menu was created with insights from both real restoration practitioners and impact monitoring experts. The menu serves as inspiration for indicators that you can use for monitoring the 4 Returns in your landscape. On March 20th, we will bring together experts Joanne Pieterse, Elton Mudyazvivi, Lucy Garrett, Kilian Walz, and Hester Koning to present the indicator menu and delve into the intricacies of monitoring landscape restoration. Through an interactive session with insightful discussions, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to measure holistic landscape restoration. Join us on the 20th March at 3.30PM for this community of practice session. Follow the link to register: https://lnkd.in/dGk2-xPU #Monitoring #Naturebasedsolutions #HolisticLandscapeRestoration
