The "Climate Ready Plan" has been released for Scotland’s railway and it's a fascinating read in the plan to tackle our ever changing climate. There is the continuing theme of technology and data to monitor our infrastructure and it shows how it will continue to be so important alongside the renewals resilience and drainage strategy. In total £1.9bn will be invested in renewing the railway’s infrastructure in Scotland over the next five years. More than £400m contributing towards the resilience of the network against extreme weather and future changes in climate. This includes over £100m on earthworks, £100m on lineside infrastructure including drainage and over £40m on structures like bridges and tunnels. What's impressive is the establishment in Scotland of the British railway’s first 24/7 specialist weather desk, staffed by qualified meteorologists, to analyse the real-time impacts of extreme weather on the railway. Remote monitoring equipment deployment on the infrastructure is also a key feature to Scotland’s Railway strategy to help give early warning of potential issues along with installation of wireless tilt meters which are now installed at over 150 locations. River level monitors and scour telemetry has also been installed on key bridges across the Scottish network.
