When we think of modern slavery, we don't often imagine it happening right under our noses, but this is the tragic reality. Slavery exists within Australian borders. Slavery can be hidden in homes, restaurants, farms, factories and on building sites. What ties all these examples together, is that someone is being exploited and controlled. To make matters worse... within our very borders, only 1 in 5 victims of slavery are identified. How is your weekend? Mine is great, and I am fortunate having wrapped up business yesterday evening to spend some time with my wife today in stunning Ljubljana. I personally fell in love with Ljubljana during my first visit to the city more than two decades ago. Since then, repeated trips for both business and pleasure delight with a city that only improves each and every year. For many in North America their first real awareness of Ljubljana came during the visit of American President Bill Clinton on June 21st, 1999. Yet this is a culturally rich jewel of a city with many centuries of history and contributions to the development of our Western societies. Slovenia, an EU member since May 2004 has further integrated into the European Union with their introuduction of the Euro on January 1st 2007 and entering into the Schengen area later the same year in December 2007. A post alone could never do #Slovenia justice and I will leave it to my talented Slovenian colleagues and friends to share the wonders of this great country. I highly recommend you visit if you have not done so. This week marks more than 9 years I have been creating and curating articles, posts, blogs, hosting Live sessions, and sharing notes and comments consistently here on LinkedIn and wow what a journey it has been. Thank You for all your kind support and encouragement which began with a simple LinkedIN article in 2014 entitled “A few thoughts on investments in MidCap organizations.” Since then WoW what a lot has changed! Recently I have found a few “haters” sending fairily vicious comments or even in thankfully fewer isolated cases personal attacks. Firstly, I would suggest to other creators out there who have shared they are facing similar perplexing feedback simply to “Shake it Off.” Then I will note, I am still smiling. There are 3 subjects I’ve found that seem to trigger such attacks in order: 1) ESG and Sustainability 2) Diversity and Equality for Underrepresented Groups 3) Heaven forbid any message questioning whether electric vehicles really are the answer to every use case for mobility (they are not) So my first message is to creators, if you run into such people in your own journey Know you are not alone. Following this, if you attempt to open a discussion and this is not possible, Ignore and eventually even Block functions are wonderful. My second message is to note how much everyone loves communities like Ljubljana where there is no vehicle traffic in the centre, where local businesses offer unique local services and cuisine, and where we experience safety, diversity, and a welcoming culture to everyone. My last message is to once again emphasize Thanks to the nearly 24K followers who have been so kind and supportive in sharing, learning, and building together here on LinkedIN. Awesome.
