I cant wait to see how this translates on TV b/c ultimately that is what is going to determine whether or not this is successful. No PC, No Problem This clip shows our live streaming facial data directly into Unreal Engine 5. It highlights the seamless integration of live facial expressions, capturing the nuances of human emotion in real-time without the need for a traditional PC setup. It's a move towards enhancing virtual interactions and bringing digital characters to life with realism. A key part of our operational DNA is constant testing, refinement and capturing critical user feedback as we push towards our goals. Last month a colleague and friend, Tom Lucas, passed away. Tom was a well known Vancouver media personality. Another colleague and friend, Chris Lindgren, reached out to ask if I remembered a piece he produced featuring an internet radio show that Tom and I launched in 1996 (I did). He said he still had it and would upload it. The segment would have been filmed in late 1996. What strikes me now is how naively optimistic we were. We truly felt that we were bringing people from around the world together into an intimate interactive setting via the internet.  There is banter about radio executives pooh-poohing the idea, musings about video coming to the internet, and jokes about buffering. There is also some foreshadowing of how people would come to be tracked on the internet. It amazed us that we could see when people were accessing the stream, and where they were coming from.  All of this pre-dates YouTube (2005), iTunes (2001) and even Napster (1999). There was some internet radio experimentation happening as early as 1993, but it took until late 1995 for things to really gain traction with the launch of RealAudio. 27 years later audio and video is ubiquitous on the internet - with competing platforms shoving stuff at us from all directions with the sole purpose of competing for clicks, giving us dopamine hits, and fuelling sensationalism, outrage and doomscrolling. There is still good stuff to be found, but it is becoming increasing harder to navigate to find it. Hopefully there are smart people out there that can right the ship. Streaming old-timers out there will chuckle at some of the technology references. Younger streamers will chuckle at the wardrobes and cheesy dialogue. What impresses me the most is how this technology allows for the accurate depiction of complex weather phenomena, from detailed cityscapes to dynamically rendered storms, all within a remarkably short broadcasting process of less than two hours. This advancement not only makes weather forecasting more engaging and informative but also highlights the potential of AR in transforming how we visualize and understand scientific data. As a tech enthusiast, I am excited to see how such technologies will continue to evolve and influence other areas of broadcasting and education. Kudos to The Weather Channel and The Future Group for pushing the boundaries of what is possible in weather broadcasting!
