Juneteenth, which takes place on June 19th each year, is the oldest known holiday celebrating the ending of slavery in the United States. In 1865, two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas to announce the freedom of the enslaved African American people. Now, in 2024, we celebrate the lives, legacies, and triumphs of the African American community, while educating ourselves on the history of slavery and oppression within our country. Let us know how you are celebrating Juneteenth this year!
