”People’s opinions are mainly designed to make them feel comfortable; truth, for most people is a secondary consideration.” — Bertrand Russell
According to a recent poll, over 63% of Albertans disagree with the idea of Cabinet having the power to fire councilors or repeal by-laws. This raises the question, who does the UCP represent? It seems that they are solely focused on their own interests and secret agendas. Check out the poll results here: https://lnkd.in/gysMDFc3

FYI - British Government now fully "reshuffled" - some Departmental detail Following the PM's very wide-ranging (if largely expected) Ministerial reshuffle at the beginning of last week, Downing Street was able to issue a fully comprehensive (if never entirely insured!) Ministerial List at the end of last week as follows, https://lnkd.in/eYFqKHCA (no snakes and ladders sadly spelt out there!) Looking at the Government Departments I tend to pay most attention to myself (MOD, DBT, DfT) - and taking as read the surprise development at the FCDO, with Lord Cameron's return - and James Cleverly's move sideways to Home Office - the key changes are: - UK Ministry of Defence: Earl Minto "simply" replaces Baroness Goldie; Ministerial responsibilities fully re-confirmed within our Ministers section of https://lnkd.in/e_ShaG_K - Department for Business and Trade: as yet unclear precisely what Minister of State Greg Hands (ex Tory Party Chairman)'s exact responsibilities will be but trade will be in the list, view our Ministers section of https://lnkd.in/ei65ajxb - Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom: all Ministerial responsibilities fully (re)confirmed within our Ministers section of https://lnkd.in/eve9KyPR Hope helpful for all those yet to consider filling the right Minister's in-box/tray with the appropriate invite/policy suggestion/call-to-arms etc. #politics #reshuffle23 #whitehall #publicaffairs #gameofthrones

#politics #nobelprizesummit The United Kingdom, by all accounts, is in a state of economic despondency of the commoner. The words “Commoner” and “Lord” with the ascendance of Britain’s former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, to 10 Downing Street as prime minister, have acquired new meanings which perhaps the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) should add as follows: Commoner. A British citizen of non-royal birth with no money, a mountain of debt, anxiety about his home and job, and fear of the future for himself and his family. Lord. A British citizen who need not be of royal birth, need not be knighted by the King, but must be wealthy and usually with an expensive boarding school education such as Eton or of that ilk, typically Oxford or Cambridge or both for university, and after that a stint in Anglo-American financial markets, preferably both on Wall Street such as at Goldman Sachs and in the City of London. The House of Commons has now become the House of the benighted “Lords” run by the predatory merchant classes of Sunak. The crowned spaniel is on the British throne at Westminster. The knighted with titles, the titular British, are now mere symbols of British aristocratic legacy for visiting in the museum that is Buckingham Palace. It is no longer the mercantilism and piracy of Elizabeth I as foreign policy or the economics of Adam Smith, but predation, economic cannibalism, as domestic policy. The commoners have fallen off the radar, consumed and cast away, jettisoned to a life of serfdom and post-modern feudalism. Britain forebodes the rise of a new empire, punning on the complete preceding part of this sentence, as humanity hangs on a knife edge.

One misconception about the Declaration of Independence is that it was signed on July 4, 1776. In fact, the Continental Congress formally declared independence on July 2, 1776. Two days later, on July 4, Congress approved the final text of the Declaration. Then it was signed on August 2, 1776. For the first 15-20 years, most didn’t celebrate it. Near the end of the 1790s the Declaration had even become controversial. One party, the Democratic-Republicans, admired it. The other, the Federalists, thought it went against their policies. By the early 1800’s, the Federalist Party began dissolve. Then it collapsed. Celebrations of the Fourth of July started to become more common. Then in 1870, almost a 100 years after the Declaration was written, Congress declared July 4th a National Holiday. Learn more at www.constitutionfacts.com.

It would also be good if the scorecared is presented in an infographic format highlighting the progressive changes in fiscal, monetary, macroeconomics and infrastructure development. The infographic would also have to highlight the government’s total expenditure in the last 5 years including disbursements to Districts (DSIP) and Provinces (PSIP), the GDP growth, the GDP per capita and the total public debt accumulated in the last 5 years, and the debt to GDP ratio.
Prime Minister (PM) James Marape is expected to present in the upcoming parliament session details of his government’s performance and achievements over the past five years and strategies going forward in achieving his government’s objects. Read More https://lnkd.in/gGCeVKqp

What are the chances that the upcoming U.S. presidential debate will give the American electorate a clear picture of two political ideological camps on matters of policy, as distinct from ad hominen personal attacks and cheap one-liners? In the E.U., translated into American terms, the states' governors vote to nominate a person for president of the executive branch, and the lower legislative chamber (the European Parliament, which is similar to the US. House of Representatives) votes up or down on the nominee. Is this a better system? Even if yes, how might it be improved? In terms of the nominations, the E.U. is in line with historical federalism because state-level officials pick the federal officials. The role of the E.U.'s parliament in approving the nominee is a nod to the compromise known as modern federalism. See: https://lnkd.in/eWbCS2dU

🌎 Yesterday, I returned home from an international work trip where I ran an advanced training up-skilling local government officials. It was one of easily over 100 similar trips I have been on in the past 10 years in various roles. If I took the U.S. Department of State's travel advisory for said country at face value, I would reconsider traveling there all together due to high levels of crime and corruption. 🌋 What I actually experienced was a beautiful, seamless trip. The participants were some of the hardest working I've ever met, the facilities were gorgeous, and I enjoyed the local culture without ever feeling unsafe. Most importantly, the work I did there was immediately impactful. It enabled the LEO's I worked with to move their financial crime investigations forward. It was a small but critical step to building a safer financial system for billions of people. 💙 Tigran Gambaryan, however, did not get a joyous homecoming like I did. He's been forcibly held in a foreign prison since Feb. 26th. That's 92 days. 92 DAYS. (For perspective, the high temp in Atlanta that day was only 62* and Beyonce's "Texas Hold 'Em" was Billboard's No. 1). I don't have all of the intimate details of the situation, but I am dumbfounded that a resolution cannot be reached without keeping a U.S. citizen who served for a decade as a Criminal Investigator detained in a foreign prison where the conditions are presumably.... I can't bring myself to really think about it. For any former FLEO who made the jump to private industry for the chance to have a bigger impact, the messaging is clear: we're on our own, any former service doesn't matter, there is no cavalry. I've written all of my Congressional reps as well as his, I suggest you do the same via usa.gov/elected-officials.
