Why safer speeds and why community action? We all want to live, work, run a business or spend time in spaces and places that are comfortable, safe, interesting and welcoming. This is our chance to be part of it and help to make our streets safer and more community and business friendly. Road trauma is one of the biggest and most sustained causes of death and injury in our communities. Speed limit reduction is an effective and cheap way of greatly reducing road deaths and serious injuries. It is estimated that by reducing speed limits by 10km/h in Western Australia, we’d be able to reduce the number of lost lives and serious road trauma by 30%. That’s 48 lives saved per year and over 500 hospitalisations averted. There is a serious benefit to reducing speed and together, we can. Speed reduction improves safety and benefits local economies and community wellbeing. It contributes to building safer, healthier, more connected and people-friendly streets, where people can walk, cycle, connect and engage. Through creating safer and more lively streets, safer speeds will directly benefit local businesses through increased visitation. We're working with our partner Road Safety Commission, our Principal Partner RAC WA plus PJA Main Roads Western Australia and Department of Transport, Western Australia to promote Safer Speeds and Better Places. We all want to live, work, run a business or spend time in spaces and places that are comfortable, safe, interesting and welcoming. This is a bottom-up, grassroots program driven by local leaders and Town Teams to make their streets better, safer, healthier and more prosperous, with the support of government agencies. The picture in the graphic is of the Inglenooks, a new public space created by the Inglewood On Beaufort #TownTeam, with the support of City of Stirling (Western Australia) on Beaufort Street in Perth, Western Australia. Road trauma is one of the biggest and most sustained causes of death and injury in our communities. Safer speeds are better for everyone and a proven way to reduce the road toll. This is our chance to be part of it and help to make our streets safer and more community and business-friendly! The annual #HousingCentral conference is happening November 20 – 22, 2023, and the #BCSPCA is proud to be a presenter and tradeshow exhibitor. On Monday afternoon, Meghann Cant and Iris Ting will be leading an interactive session: Partnering to Address the Challenges of Pet-Friendly Housing, and Sarah Herring will be hosting our tradeshow booth on Monday and Tuesday. Research is clear that the human-animal bond enhances our physical and mental well-being. Pets can help alleviate stress, reduce loneliness, relieve depression, and facilitate healing and resiliency. Evidence also shows that people see their pets as family members and often make difficult decisions, including staying in unsafe housing or turning down temporary shelter or permanent housing, to keep their family together. However, co-housing people and their pets is not without challenges. Join partner organizations BC Housing and the BC SPCA for a panel discussion of a unique pilot project to address these issues and support more widespread adoption of pet-friendly housing. Learn more about the BC SPCA’s pet-friendly housing work at: https://lnkd.in/d5s-wn_a and register for #HousingCentral at: https://lnkd.in/epH3-nx.

Parkinson’s patients continue to grow in number. Visibility to this disease is seen in all aspects of our lives. Today Parkinson’s can be very normal work conversation when it wasn’t before. Celebrity death talk at the water cooler frequently includes the word Parkinson’s. Think about your work for a minute. Does your organization have a focus on disability awareness and advocacy? Really ? Does it? Do you have a Parkinson’s Hero in your organization? Many of us are always looking for things to get behind. Why not get behind your team. Does it make sense to give a Hero walk a go. Participation in these Hero walks just might be a way to communicate and strengthen your support both internally and in your communities. We are participating in the Grand Rapids Hero walk. Need a team to join. We are listed in the choices. We would love for all to join us in person or in spirit. It is a fun day. Give it some thought and hope to see you there.

My heart is asking me to listen on sidewalks a lot and double down on writing my book on Sidewalk Talk. And May marks 9 years of Sidewalk Talk. Happy Birthday Sidewalk Talk. 🎂 Holy $hittballs you have taught me a lot. I am doing "book therapy" right now because I want to say some dangerous stuff about our dehumanizing ways. I want to be clear in my psyche as I write. The Identity Trap (yes a nod to Yascha Mounk's book of the same name) we are in right now I will roar about. Listening on sidewalks has chipped away at my reverence to identity obsession while I remain committed to inclusion and justice. I am glad to have sorted how to run Sidewalk Talk sustainably to my spirit while allowing it to safely expand. I burnt myself out three years ago. Lots of soul work, mistakes, learning boundaries. Operationally, Sidewalk Talk has expanded beyond a background checked chapter leader model where folks must pay to be a leader bc the application process is costly. Many just wanted to listen with a friend and not do a chapter. So...Tah Dah...we listened. Sidewalk Talk now gives you the "How To" to grab a friend and go listen in a friend group on the Sidewalk safely and effectively for FREE ... not even needing to be expressly part of Sidewalk Talk. A complete democratization. We still charge money for our trainings on Listening and Conflict resolution and chapter leadership so we can cover operating expenses. But everything else is freely offered. Cool eh? Go listen? www.sidewalk-talk.org
Hi Sidewalk Talk Family! So something you should know about us. YOU are Sidewalk Talk. YOU bring Sidewalk Talk listening to your town. This thing is not "US" going into "YOUR" town. It is YOU brining Sidewalk Talk to your town. So if you like what you see add your email here and get the guide on how to listen safely on the sidewalk. Submit your email here or see the link in our Instagram bio. https://lnkd.in/gNG58K8 We love you! We are so excited to make this world more loving, inclusive, and kind. WE CAN DO THIS! Have a great end of your week. #SidewalkTalk #socialhealth #communityhealth #Youmatter #NGO

**A Milestone in Transformation: Welcoming New Beginnings:** A few months back, I shared the tale of a house in Jacksonville, Arkansas, hit hard by a massive tornado. Big news today! Here’s the revised version with your addition: **A Milestone in Transformation: Welcoming New Beginnings:** A few months back, I shared the tale of a house in Jacksonville, Arkansas, that was hit hard by a massive tornado. Today, I have big news! **Restoration and a Fresh Start**: From Benton to a New Chapter in Jacksonville. We've just welcomed an amazing new tenant—a dedicated public healthcare worker and super mom of four. She’s starting her own life in this restored home, which feels like things are coming full circle. It’s more than fixing up walls—it’s about building resilience and backing those who care for our community. For those who might be wondering—yes, we did receive an offer to purchase the property at a particularly high profit. This transformation shows how deep our impact can go beyond just making money to creating real value in communities. Watch as we continue this journey of hope and fresh starts. Your support and engagement mean everything to us as we rebuild lives, not just buildings. #HopeRestoration #CommunityImpact #JacksonvilleRenewal #RealEstateWithPurpose
