The African Mental Health Data Prize is now open! Led by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), the prize will fund African teams to analyse data and develop digital tools to address anxiety, depression and psychosis across the continent. World Health Organization estimates 116 million people in Africa had mental health problems before the Covid-19 pandemic. This number is likely higher now. But access to quality mental health care is limited - and more research is needed. We partnered with the APHRC to develop the prize and uncover new data-driven insights into mental health in Africa, rooted in local needs and lived experiences. So far, the APHRC have led the prize by: 🔵 Building capacity with training on the use of data in mental health, statistical analysis, machine learning and more. 🔵 Matching researchers, data scientists and lived experience experts to aid collaboration. 🔵 Helping teams access datasets across Africa. Now the prize is open, and multidisciplinary teams of researchers, scientists and start-ups are invited to apply. Up to ten prizes of £200,000 will be awarded to address critical knowledge gaps and improve understanding of mental health in Africa. Applications are open until 30 July. • Ekin Bolukbasi, Data Prizes Manager at Wellcome, says: "Data can revolutionise mental health research. This prize aims to uncover data-driven insights and groundbreaking ideas to transform mental health in Africa."
