Costa Rica (#costarica) has done it. It is the first tropical country to have restored its #forests and to generate more than 99% of #electricity from #renewable energy. Key lessons as indicated in the articles: 1. Restoration of forest better be done by re-allocating non-forest land to #indigenous people. 2. Reclaim #farmland to build forests - 163,000 hectares of protected landscapes. 3. Renewable #energy at the right location - started with 99% renewable generated electricity for 75 days in 2015, now around the year they are are generating 99% renewable electricity. Some form of storage would help in the long-term.

This month SmartestEnergy Business launches its new reforestation scheme to help customers support more climate action. We've proudly collaborated with Ecologi | Certified B Corp, who work with carefully chosen partners such as Eden Reforestation Projects to facilitate reforestation across Madagascar, Kenya and Mozambique. These projects are a vital tool in the fight against climate change and also provide stable employment for local communities. 🌲 The scheme works in harmony with our renewable product offering to empower UK business owners to make the smarter switch to cleaner generation sources. To kickstart the scheme, we’ve already funded the planting of over 10,000 trees and we hope you’ll share our excitement in what is just the beginning of our journey! 🌿 Learn more about our Tree Planting Scheme https://lnkd.in/eZYg5m8M View our business renewable products https://lnkd.in/eNkk8k-d Donate to our climate impact dashboard https://lnkd.in/eQ2eQYk3 #greenenergy #greenergeneration #treeplanting #climateaction #smarterswitch

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal Seven aims to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all” by the year 2030. That’s a tall order. In 2019, 917-million people in Africa (about 80% of the region’s population) relied on wood, charcoal, kerosene, animal and crop waste or other solid fuels to cook their food and heat their homes Leon Louw #whyafrica #whypowerafrica #energy #gas #netzero #carbonemissions #carbon #climatechange #deforestation #fossilfuels #ESG #environmentalmanagement #naturalresources #environment #conservation #electricity #africa https://lnkd.in/ebBtR-UK

🌞 Solar Energy in NZ: A Sunny Side of Amusement 🌟 Who knew solar energy could be so... amusing? Here are some funny facts that'll brighten your day, especially if you're in New Zealand! Rosy Returns: As NZ's sunniest city, Rotorua has more hours of sunshine per year than most parts of Europe. That's a lot of solar panels – or a lot of tans, we're not sure which! Average Sunlight: The average New Zealander spends about 15 minutes a day outside. If we all got just one minute less sunbathing, we could power a house for almost an hour! Politician's Quip: Speaking of Auckland, Mayor Phil Goff once said, "New Zealand should aim to become the world's leading advanced economy powered by 100% renewable energy," which sounds like a sunny forecast for our future! Animal Instincts: One Kiwi energy company got creative when a weasel chewed through their solar panels. They installed a "weasel fence" – because even animals want to be part of the green revolution! Solar Smoothies: No, it's not a new health trend – but some enterprising souls in Nelson managed to power their smoothie shop using solar energy. Now that's a sunny breakfast! Climate Change Joke: Ever heard of the "solar panel dog"? It's a cartoon representing a dog with solar panels on its back, which every time the sun goes down, the dog looks sad – because that's when humans turn off their lights! So there you have it, NZ's solar energy journey isn't just about powering up; it's a story filled with quirky anecdotes and a bit of humor. Share your solar-powered tales below! #SolarNZ #RenewableEnergy #GreenJokes #SunnySideUp

Would you help a poor community do better if you could? What parallels exist between poor communities in developed nations and large poor areas of developing countries? Yesterday I wrote that Africa's use of #NaturalGas for development is fair and just, considering any supposed problem of #emissions was not created by Africa. https://lnkd.in/dusMp8gp The excellent article by Nigel Bruce & Daniel Pope below calls for adoption of #LPG or Liquid Petroleum Gas, for cleaner cooking for the developing world and in particular, sub-Saharan Africa. The fact that they put people first, even if it meant using #fossilfuels, may have been why it did not get the traction in 6 months as yesterday's WaPo article got in a couple days. And in it they reveal: "Another worrying factor that’s emerged recently, and frequently reported to us by African country partners, is resistance from influential donor countries and their development institutions to invest in LPG because it’s a fossil fuel." So, even with over 3 million people dying a year due to pollution from cooking with woodfire, dung, kerosene or coal, resist because it's a fossil fuel. https://lnkd.in/dkSkn55T Just for comparison, that is more deaths than COVID had in 2020 and it is happening every year. The entire world stopped (ostensibly) to handle COVID but what is the world doing to handle this? And believe it or not, the International Energy Agency (IEA), World Health Organization both agree on LPG. The unrelenting propaganda against use of #oilandgas at any cost is becoming untenable. I take that one step further today, and I would like to posit [suggest] that poor urban communities, in much the same way, should be allowed and helped to develop with the same key ingredient: reliable, affordable and accessible #energy. Robert Bryce's excellent documentary JUICE - THE SERIES, in episode 2, a lawyer for a Latino minority group who got together to achieve affordable home ownership in #California was essentially blindsided by the very people that called for #environmentaljustice, the California Air Resources Board. https://lnkd.in/dmrkhPVN With all the effort at #diversityequityinclusion or #DEI, shouldn't an obvious goal be to remove barriers to success in impoverished areas so as to allow affordable & feasible routes to home & business ownership and a higher standard of living? As pointed out in Juice and in my essay here (https://lnkd.in/gGX7D2jM), how does it help any #socialjustice objective to block poor communities' upward mobility by limiting their use of affordable modalities such as fossil fuels (ICE cars, natural gas heating and cooking, etc.)? Real justice is finding and removing barriers so that everyone has those opportunities. Included is holistic energy policy. Let's make those better energy decisions without prejudice. Energy access deserves to be in the limelight all 366 days of 2024 but particularly so today, on the (first ever!) #InternationalDayofCleanEnergy. See how our partner FMO helps small holder farmers to simultaneously gain access to renewable energy and produce biofertilizers that help to increase yields. #SDG7 #leavenoonebehind #cleancooking #smallholderfarmers #accesstoenergy
Today, on #InternationalDayofCleanEnergy, we shed light on the importance clean energy solutions play in leaving no one behind and protecting the planet. As the climate emergency rages, sustainable energy can help to reduce emissions, while ensuring more reliable #accesstoenergy for all. With 675 million people living without energy access, and 80% located in Sub-Saharan Africa, we believe there must be a just and inclusive transition to foster socioeconomic development for vulnerable communities worldwide. One of the ways we're supporting the clean energy transition is through our customer Sistema.bio / Sistema Biobolsa, which manufactures and installs modular biogas digesters for rural #smallholderfarmers. This provides the farmers access to a renewable energy source, replacing fossil fuel and wood-fired cooking, while the biofertilizer increases crop yields. Through our Access to Energy fund that we manage for the Dutch government and the DFCD Land Use Facility, we've provided several investments to Sistema.bio over the years to enable socioeconomic empowerment and bolster economic growth. Discover how through the video below.
