What are you trying to say by using 👍 ? Are you showing sincere agreement? Or are you being passive aggressive or dismissive? Online culture and connectivity has accelerated the change in the language we use, and it shouldn’t surprise us that the meaning of emojis are shifting too.

Ever heard of the band Phish? My neighbor loves them. When he first told me, I made the joke that if you've seen Phish once you've probably seen them 10 times. He laughed and said, "Try 120 times". One hundred and twenty times... that's Phishhead status. Which, by the way, I learned is a real term for major Phish fans. Phish was playing 4 dates in a row here in Vegas over that weekend and I asked my neighbor which night he was attending. "All of them." I was intrigued. We got talking a bit more about Phish, his fandom, and one key stat that he shared was seriously insane: "They're like one of the top touring acts in the world. Last year lifetime ticket sales passed 500 million dollars. They've never even had a top radio hit– and only one album to make it to the top 10." That's half a billion dollars for a band that many people have likely never heard of and couldn't name one song from... All of this proves that you don't need a massive audience to build a media juggernaut. What you need are massive fans. Easier said than done, I know... but Phish feels like a masterclass in how building longterm brand value is possible without chasing the regular accolades and awards/recognition that an industry offers. When you build for the long term: 🐟 you're ultimately building for you: outliving the fickle & the trendy 🐟 your relationship with your audience becomes something singular and special (a brand "moat") 🐟 your craft/musicianship naturally improves 🐟 your efforts build equity in the aggregate -- 🐟 you co-create with your fans in a feedback loop that acts like a jam session: innovation happens naturally as you find the groove together So, if you're thinking about building something, commit to doing it for you. I believe there's an audience that will find you if you authentically do it long (and loud) enough.

Why not turn the volume up, so others can too? 😀 As you listen carefully, ask yourself how many of the (often extremely personal) questions you would answer to a total stranger. Then consider that most people do this everyday with their social media accounts, freebie phone apps, email, cloud storage solutions etc. Think for a moment just how much data about you - every intimate detail of your life - has been harvested, collated, analysed by AI... Realise that it is stored forever, an unerasable permanent record. And that you have absolutely no control over it. Understand that your personal data is constantly sold to anyone and everyone prepared to pay for it: from marketers and companies intent on selling you their products; to government three letter agencies (TLAs) - both domestic and foreign - who want to do everything from know your precise movements and spending habits, to influencing your opinions on... well, everything (not least elections). In the coming weeks I'm going to start a regular series on my Substack explaining some of the online data harvesting practices that most people are oblivious to, or simply don't think about, and offering some suggestions as to how you can protect yourself from them and recover some privacy.
