#Socialmedia takes advantage of people’s predisposition to attend to threatening stimuli by promoting content in algorithms that capture attention. However, this content is often not what people expressly state they would like to see. In a new BBS commentary, we propose that social media companies should weigh users’ expressed preferences more heavily in algorithms. We propose modest changes to user interfaces that could reduce the abundance of threatening content in the online environment. https://lnkd.in/eV5Xb6mR via Claire Robertson Kareena del Rosario & Steve Rathje

Confirmation bias is on the uptick, primarily because social media allows users to optimize access to information of interest. The phenomenon is called “filter bubble,” where users only access the information they are interested in and deprive themselves of the opportunity to examine information from broader perspectives. #socialmedia #confirmationbias

For practically a decade, I didn’t go on social media, except for an occasional check up on my Linked In page. For me, the value of what it brought to my life wasn’t worth the effort to maintain a consistent moderation of it. As the most virtually connected generation of all time, I believe in the importance of moderation over restriction. For us to increase our discipline over numbing out behaviors/scrolling mindlessly, we have to practice putting our devices away when the time comes. It’s most certainly a skill. How do you find moderation with social and news media?

Mark challenges us to be more thoughtful of the footprint we leave behind. "Memes are the Lexicon of the digital age. So as we share and create new memes, remember, we're not just playing in cyberspace, we're writing our own chapter in the saga of society. We are leaving footnotes in history that future historians will dissect pixel by pixel to understand what we were and how we thought." Read on for the full story!
“When I am in the mood for a good existential crisis, overthinking the absurd amount of power that technology and the internet hold over me seems to do the trick. Consciously, we all make decisions on how we decide to use the internet and social media. From how much we share, to what platforms we use, to what we consume. Unconsciously, we all have had our perception of reality skewed by something we have seen on social media.” Click this link to read more: https://lnkd.in/gGg6H5Yy #Memes #Blog #InternetCulture #DigitalCulture
