It is difficult to express the emotions and the journey we’ve been on since 2013 at Cloudhead Games. The fact that we’re still here 10 years later and have grown so much, is a testament to the people who work with us and their belief in this medium of Virtual Reality. A group of people who understand that when approached in the right way, VR’s magic is undeniable, and that sense of mission to bring a child-like wonder back into a chaotic world is infectious.
I have so many stories to unfurl about this industry. Like that time in 2014, as a starving developer, flying to E3 to meet Palmer Luckey and find out if Oculus CV1 would ship with motion controllers (it didn’t). Finding Luckey in the hall, he was kind enough to spill a few beans but forgot his wallet and so I had to buy him lunch. The hilarious irony of covering this Billionaire wiz kids lunch as a semi-desperate startup was not lost on me (You still owe me lunch Palmer!). Flying back home to our small team at the time and breaking the news that the innovative systems we built for hand interactions were all for nothing and that we’d have to include gamepad support instead. And then a short time later, in a strange turn of events being pulled into a secret summit with Valve & HTC, where they reinforced our stubborn belief in standing, 360, hand tracked experiences for VR. We were saved! Well, sort of…
I could go on (and will when I retire) but that story encapsulates the quirky, weird and wonderful rollercoaster ride we’ve had in this industry. Every 6 months a new innovation or strategy, every 6 months changing our designs or strategy to account for them, every year, for the last 10 years, a loud proclamation that “VR is DEAD! FOR REALZ this time!!!” by the tech press. And so it goes all these years later, despite constant growth, despite people loving VR, despite the biggest companies on the planet doubling down on XR, we’re still fighting to educate, to create, to offer everyone a beautiful waking dream. If only for a moment.
Happy 10 years Cloudhead Games and a sincere thanks to all of our wonderful peers, companies fighting for the same cause. There’s much more to come ;)
