Women have been fighting for equal participation in the Olympics for over a century. It’s a story of passion, solidarity, and perseverance. From the earliest struggles of gender pioneers to the women who dominate on the fields today, each generation has contributed to the ongoing progress of gender equity in sports and beyond. In 1900, a trailblazing group of women competed in the Paris Olympics. Out of 997 athletes, 22 of them were women. This summer, back in Paris, more than 5,000 women will be competing in the Olympics — and women will represent 50% of total athletes for the first time in history. We’re celebrating this historic milestone and the extraordinary athletes who have paved the way. They showed us how to embody strength and power, not just on the field, but in every arena of life. They showed us what it means to be #StrongAsAMother. Some key victories for women in the Olympics: 𝟭𝟵𝟬𝟬: Women participate for the first time, at the Paris Olympics, in events including tennis, sailing, and golf. 𝟭𝟵𝟮𝟬: Women's Olympic events debut in Antwerp, including the 100-meter dash and 800-meter run. 𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟴: Fanny Blankers-Koen, a track & field athlete and mother of two from the Netherlands, wins four gold medals at the 1948 London Olympics. They call her “The Flying Housewife.” 𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟴: At age 16, Deborah Meyer is the first female swimmer to win three gold medals in individual events during one Games, in Mexico City this year. 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟭: From this year forward, any new sport seeking to join the Olympics is required to have women's competitions. 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟲: Joy Fawcett, star defender for the U.S. team and original “Soccer Mom,” competes in the Atlanta Olympics just two years after giving birth to her first child. She goes on to compete in four Women's World Cups and three Olympics over the course of her career, and has two more children. 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟴: Marit Bjørgen, cross-country skier from Norway, becomes a mom in 2015 and then competes in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics — where she earns five medals, including two golds, at age 37. 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟬: The Tokyo Olympics feature the highest-ever percentage of female athletes: 49%. 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: Women's events continue to expand this year in Paris, and a new Olympic Village Nursery has been established through advocacy work by Allyson Felix — the most decorated track & field athlete of all time, with 22 gold Olympic medals, and a proud mother of two. The equal participation of women in the Olympics, and the growing visibility of athlete moms, are momentous victories. Each new achievement builds on the legacy of those who dared to challenge norms and push boundaries.
