It’s career fair season again, one of my favorite times in the recruitment year! I’ll be attending career fairs, virtual and in-person, in September and October across the US. I always enjoy chatting with students about their aspirations and hearing their fresh perspectives. ✈ I was recently asked by an exiting summer intern what I look for in students when recruiting for internships at Linesight. 🎙 Communication is key! We’re a consulting firm so our team are interacting with various stakeholders every day. 🎤 Tell me a story! Here are my Top Two questions for gaging communication style at a career fair. 1️⃣ What do you want to get out of a summer internship experience? So many students tell me that they just want a job, which is fine, you’re still in school, and figuring things out. But tell me a story about something you want to learn at an internship. Tell me about a class you’ve taken that you enjoyed and want to see how those principles are applied on the job. This will help me determine if our internship opportunities are aligned with your learning goals. It also lets me know you’re got something going on in that head of yours! 2️⃣ What is a course, student organization, or class project that you really enjoyed being a part of this past year? This is where you get to share something that made you really excited! Geek out on something academic that you find interesting! I’ve had a lot of students be shy about sharing their joy because they think it’s “nerdy or lame”. Tell me all the reasons you liked that course, or activity your student group participated in, or that class that you couldn’t stop focusing on. 🎇 Don’t be afraid to share your joy or aspirations fully with recruiter at career fairs! You’re excitement makes it all the more fun for us. It also makes you stand out from all the other students we’ll be talking to across the country. 🎇 I’ll be sharing more tips for students attending #construction and #engineering career fairs over the next few weeks. For all my other recruitment colleagues out there, what are some tips you’d like to share with students as they prep for career fairs this fall? #CareerFairs #Internships #RecruitmentTips

How students prepare for their career in college. Old way • Wait for the final year to get internships. • Focus only on GPA. • Dependable on his university degree “name”. • Attend job fairs without networking. New way • Start prepare from day one in college. • Focus on a achieving GPA & Experience balance. • Volunteer and take leadership roles on students clubs. • Share their careers and wins on LinkedIn. • Sending personalized messages and networking in Job fairs. • Work on side projects based on their interests. There’s no room for the traditional old way any more. Create your chance. Do the new way.

Something I wish I was told as a young freshman engineer at UH: After going to several career fairs over the past 3 years, I believe I've determined a personally efficient way to mass-apply for internships (and co-ops): - After obtaining company names (from a career fair), first search the companies through eCONNECTION (found on the AccessUH portal) in the 'jobs' tab. - If you're not finding the companies, positions, or locations you were looking for, apply through the given site (any address or QR code you obtained at the career fair). - If you were not given a specific site to go to, navigate to the company's website and find their 'careers' or 'Work for us' tab and search for "intern" or "co-op". *The reason for starting with eCONNECTION is so you can apply for the Engineering Career Center's 'CO-OP Process' (more information at https://lnkd.in/gjZ45ENA). This allows you to remain a student at UH without taking classes while you work full-time as a co-op during a semester. **Be sure to track all the companies you've applied for as you go, just to stay organized.
