Canvas has advanced to the Top 10 finalists of the #2024IvoryPrize award! Awarded by Ivory Innovations, it recognizes the most innovative solutions to housing affordability, accessibility, and attainability. https://lnkd.in/g_7VNrDT “Canvas applies cutting-edge technological innovation to a field where such innovation is exceedingly rare - construction. Their robotic alternative to traditional drywalling makes the process faster and safer, but also, importantly, can be utilized by virtually any worker with minimal training. As labor shortages continue to impact the speed and cost of homebuilding, the ingenuity that Canvas demonstrates is sorely needed.” - Chad Reed #2024IvoryPrize #ConstructionInnovation #Robotics

We have all seen the robots pouring concrete to create 3D "printed" buildings, but maybe that isn't your aesthetic. Amsterdam based robotics startup Monumental looks to change that! Here you see a small team of robots building a brick wall. Monumental is on a mission to transform the construction industry with efficient, AI-driven construction robots capable of building walls autonomously. They say it’s the first time AI, autonomous tech and low-cost hardware have been combined in this way to create construction robots capable of working on-site. In the US, there is a shortage of at least 500,000 construction workers, and one report I saw said bricklayers are fourth in severity of shortages. On their website, Monumental cites a European report on labor shortages and surpluses. This report indicates that 19 countries in Europe are suffering from severe bricklaying shortages, and it appears to be the #1 most severe labor shortage in Europe. Who knew? Construction is a major industry contributing to the U.S. economy. The industry employs 8.0 million employees and creates nearly $2.1 trillion worth of structures each year. Monumental’s robots have been built to solve these labor shortages. Fitted with advanced sensors, cutting-edge computer vision and small cranes, each Monumental robot can place bricks and mortar in industrial and residential walls with human-level precision, accuracy and efficiency. Each is operated by Monumental’s AI-powered software, Atrium, and is small enough to go anywhere a human can, whether that’s in tight corners, through doorways, or in a van. Because of that, Monumental just raised $25 million in venture capital co-led by Plural and Hummingbird Ventures. Pretty cool.
