Taylor Swift's Tour Shows Where the Music Industry Value Lies 🎤 The staggering success of Taylor Swift's "The Eras" tour highlights a massive shift in the music industry. As Statista analysis explores, music revenues now come from live performances, not recorded music sales. Swift's tour has already grossed over $2 billion, with $13 million per show. This eclipses revenues even from the peak CD sales era. It reflects how the internet upended music distribution and revenues. 🎧 Once, recorded music sales drove the industry, followed by licensing. But with piracy and streaming cratering sales, live concerts now dominate. Fans crave the in-person experience and connection. 📍 Artists like Swift build the fanbase through recordings, then make their money touring. 📍 The music artifact became promotional material for the live event. 📍 This presents challenges, as touring has high overhead and relies on relentless demand. But for top artists, it captures where true music value lies today. Music has been disrupted, pivoting from products to experiences. 🏟️ #music #valuecreation #digitaldisruption #experience

Another interesting read: In my view, the Super Fan-centric approach skews the balance in favour of super fans at the expense of other tiers of fans. It presents cynical exploitation where a fan’s worth is measured by spending power, it neglects casual listeners, bankrupts loyal fans, disadvantages independent music creators, limits the voices of indie music creators since major labels have significant influence and a control where music copyrights and distribution is concerned …. It has the potential of shifting the focus away from music publishing and streaming income sources. The Super fan concept, as it is presented in this opinion piece, has a great deal of drawbacks, in my opinion. As a result, I believe that regulations and legislation may be crucial for protecting independent music creators. ….

This article captures so much of my thoughts around this hyper focus in superfans. Add an emerging market lense to this: Emerging market fans with less disposable income are not less deserving of music and art in general. This hyperfocus on superfans is not sustainable

Striving towards equality for all, in music and beyond | Co-founder & COO @ Seven20 & The Circuit Group
The DOJ is suing Live Nation for its monopoly on the music industry. We’ve all watched this happening for the past few years. There’s been no competition, no diversity in the live entertainment industry. Finally, we’re saying ‘monopoly’ out loud and acknowledging what we’ve all been forced to accept. This is a precedent for things to come, not only in live music but across the wider music industry. Corporations are capturing entire corners of the market, driving prices up for consumers, and ultimately, damaging the fan experience for all. For innovation to happen, there has to be fair competition. Let’s hope this is the start of a more dynamic and innovative industry for all.

Great read Eamonn Forde, and yes, the totally arrogance of the big labels killed music in return for their share prices going up for last 15 years based on streaming’s double digit growth. Well the growth has all but stopped now and the big 3 are looking for new revenue streams. So all of a sudden, superfans are important, as if they were never the life blood of the industry in the first place! You’d be amazed at the enquiries and signings we have made in the last 3 months compared to the last few years. I’m getting meetings coming FROM labels asking how they can harness superfans with our FanCircles platform. That never happened once in the previous 7 years. And they are trying to get to us before the artists do, so they can take their cut. I hope the music industry follows the needs of the business of making music now. Because the message we have been indoctrinated into thinking for the past decade plus, is that streaming networks are the only way. Totall bullsh*t. They have only benefited the labels with the rights to 45 years of backcatalog, and product placement driving art and artists. That, is not the music industry I want to be in.

Amongst musicians and other music industry professionals, you'll oftentimes hear that 'recorded music no longer has monetary value' as they point to dwindling returns from streaming. But just look at the numbers for Sony, and they're up: Sony pulled in nearly 2B USD in the last quarter alone from recorded music, not including publishing. Physical sales, like CDs and Vinyl did about 200M USD in that quarter. This one major label, one quarter. The buyers are there. The demand is there. So where does this sentiment come from: 'You're only going to make it with live performances and merch'? It's the 99.9% of artists who are not feeling it. #web3music is poised to change the game by matching audience demand with artist value- recorded music included. Watch this space. Link to article from MBW in first comment. P.S. How do you think artists can find new ways to monetize their recordings?
