WPP unites Wunderman Thompson and VMLY&R to create a global powerhouse in VML. While this is big news, it might be the biggest for the advertising industry and though a lot of us have opinions in favour or against it, here’s what I think. On one hand, we have J. Walter Thompson Co. that was incorporated in 1896 and has a legacy of around 127 years. And on the other is VML, (no it’s not Vector Markup Language), founded in 1992 by John Valentine, Scott McCormick and Craig Ligibel specialised in advertising, digital and social media with a legacy (If i can) of 31 years. Both of them uniting to create a new Global Powerhouse tells us something about the present and has a hidden message for the future. Especially for the ones who still think that mainline is advertising. The way new age mediums - be it social, digital, performance, Influencer or even AI, are helping brands to target the right audience and generate more sales, the shift was and is bound to happen. So what’s the takeout? It’s simple - think about why the new powerhouse is called VML and not WT. Personally Jon Cook & Mel Edwards I welcome and love this change and can see a great future for all of us.

This is a heartfelt post. The recent announcement of Wunderman Thompson, VML Y&R being merged under one entity VML took a while for me to get a grasp of. Or let me say, it took me a while to digest what had happened. Having spent half my career with Wunderman, JWT (Contract) and Y&R in one capacity or the other, it’s almost a body blow (Maybe not that much). For being a strong pillar of planning in india (JWT), to the one of loyalty/ CRM globally (Wunderman) it’s a bit sad to see these two brands walk into the sunset. Make no mistake, these are two brands that have commanded solid presence. Wunderman at one time was the largest CRM agency in the world and JWT the largest advertising agency in India.
