As we celebrate the 4th of July, it's a time to reflect on the complex and ever-evolving identity of our nation. While the ideals of independence, equality and justice have long defined the American spirit, the reality is that the freedoms we celebrate have not been equally accessible to all. In recent years, we've witnessed troubling developments that have left many feeling disheartened and disenfranchised. It's a somber reminder that the work of building a more perfect union is an ongoing struggle, requiring empathy, courage and a continued commitment to the values that form the bedrock of this country. Even in the face of adversity, there remains an undeniable resilience and sense of community that has carried us through times of great change and challenge. This 4th of July, let us come together to honor that indomitable spirit - not through flags and fireworks alone, but by listening to diverse perspectives, championing equal rights, and recommitting ourselves to the noble principles that inspired our forebears. For it is only by acknowledging our imperfections and working to address them with grace and determination that we can truly celebrate the promise of America. So as we gather to mark this holiday, let us do so with open hearts and minds, recognizing that the path to freedom is long, but the journey is one we must undertake together. I was busy with The Other Thing over the last few weeks, but it's worth highlighting this recent report on who is applying for, and receiving, funding from The Arts Council in Ireland. The main article makes reference to the Artist in the Community Scheme (strangely called "the CREATE scheme" in this report) only in terms of the gender disparity. This is an issue, and it is worth exploring why so few male artists apply to the scheme. But, I'd also like to highlight the fact that, based on the 2022 data in this report, the AIC Scheme had the highest level of ethnic diversity in both applicants and awardees and also had the highest proportion of awardees declaring a disability (other than the Arts & Disability Connect scheme where this is an eligibility requirement, so their figure is 100%). Neither of these things have happened by accident. There has been a long period of focused work in Create over recent years to understand the barriers our systems create for certain artists, what steps we can take to support them at all stages, and how we can rethink our processes to make them more inclusive. It's very important to understand that this took time and required real dedication from the Create team and the artists who contributed to the learning. It isn't solved by empty statements and tick-box exercises. We're still far from perfect, but we've made a lot of progress, and we want to continue to think about new ways of approaching arts funding to make things more equitable and inclusive. #collaborativearts #artsfunding #artscouncilofireland

We were delighted to produce the latest equality data report for the The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon published this week. The analysis in this report is based on diversity data submitted as part of applications made to the Arts Council and for Arts Council schemes managed by Create and Arts & Disability Ireland in the year 2022. The diversity of applications and awards are compared in terms of disability, ethnicity, gender, and where possible, geographic location. To understand the relative demographic representativeness of applicants and recipients, each of these metrics have been compared (where possible) to the population of Ireland Census 2022. This report presents a summary of key findings from that analysis. The following differences are most pronounced, and these strongly reflect the patterns evident in the previous year: Gender: There is a higher proportion of both applicants and recipients who identify as female compared to the general population. On average individuals who identify as non- binary apply for and are granted the highest award value. Disability: Individuals who identify as having a disability are under-represented amongst applicants and recipients compared to the general population. On average, individuals who answered ‘Yes’ to having a disability apply for and are granted the lowest award value. Ethnicity: The majority of applicants and recipients identified as White Irish, which is in line with the census 2022 data. The success rate for awards is also highest among applicants from White or White Irish backgrounds. The rate of application and award is lowest among individuals who identify as Other or Mixed, Asian or Asian Irish, Black or Black Irish, or belonging to the Traveller Community. Geography: Dublin was significantly over-represented in terms of proportion of applicants and recipients compared to the population. Cork, Galway, Wicklow, Clare and Sligo were also slightly over-represented in applications.

Full disclosure: Hernan Bonomo is my husband, and the person who has most shaped my political perspective. We often vehemently disagree particularly in the recent roller coaster years of global and national politics that we follow. I readily admit that with the arc of hindsight, he's usually right and I've come to appreciate his ability to cut through the noise, link seemingly disparate events, and write with a moving clarity. This is worth a read for those who care about #equity #justice and #civilrights. follow up note: he will never be right about what music to listen to on a road trip.

We have foolishly allowed the capture of genuine civil rights movements by an alliance between opportunistic elites whose only concern is self-preservation, and narcissistic, closeted authoritarians disguised as "socially progressive liberals" on a quest to spread their sense of cultural superiority. This phony diversity doesn't promote equality or any sense of justice and must be rejected.
