Progress on Carbon Capture and Storage!
New #carboncapture and storage network progress. Our first Class VI permit application in Texas has been deemed administratively complete by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This permit would allow us to store captured CO2 underground at a site in southeast Texas. Next up is the EPA’s technical review of the permit. This is one step closer to building the biggest carbon capture and storage network in the U.S. Gulf Coast. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gTM-zPbp

𝙏𝙚𝙭𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙊𝙞𝙡𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙒𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙜𝙚 In Texas, a significant environmental and regulatory debate is unfolding around the discharge of treated oilfield wastewater into rivers and streams. Companies, driven by restrictions on underground wastewater injection linked to seismic activity, are seeking permits to release treated wastewater into water bodies like the Pecos River. This shift comes as traditional disposal methods become less viable. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is at the forefront, tasked with regulating these discharges amid concerns about the potential environmental impact. Critics and environmental advocates express apprehension about introducing pollutants, including radioactive materials and toxic chemicals, into ecosystems. Despite these concerns, companies argue that the treatment processes make the water safe for discharge and could benefit aquatic life. As Texas navigates this complex issue, balancing industrial needs and environmental safety remains a critical challenge. The state's approach could set precedents for how produced water is managed, emphasizing the need for rigorous scientific assessment and transparent regulatory practices. #EnvironmentalRegulation #WaterManagement #OilIndustry #Texas https://lnkd.in/gdZ6JbiT

Establishing carbon hubs like Milestone Carbon’s in the Midland Basin provides a low-cost solution for heavy industry and energy producers seeking to reduce and offset emissions, including natural gas processing, electricity generation, and other critical industries. The Permian Basin has a long history of safe CO2 transportation and injection, and Milestone Carbon is excited to support industrial decarbonization in the region. In addition, these sites will create jobs connected with the buildout and operation of the CCS facilities which are key to attracting other low-carbon products and technologies such as hydrogen production, low-carbon ammonia, and low-carbon power.
Today, Milestone Carbon announced the development of a CO2 sequestration hub in the southwestern Midland Basin. Spanning parts of both Midland and Upton counties, the site has the potential to support multiple wells that will enable the permanent geological storage of carbon dioxide. Additionally, the company has recently received a Class II injection well permit from the Texas Railroad Commission, and has submitted a Class VI injection well permit application, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recently confirmed as administratively complete. Companies in the oil and gas industry are seeking new ways to dispose of the substantial amount of wastewater produced during drilling. In response to increasingly stringent regulations around wastewater injection, a growing number of companies are developing methods to purify the water for release into watersheds. One company has applied for a state permit to discharge up to 840,000 gallons per day of treated oilfield wastewater into a tributary of Salt Creek, which feeds into the Pecos River. While this volume may not be significant, it could pave the way for larger projects that could transform the river. However, concerns have been raised about the potential environmental impact of introducing this new waste stream into rivers. Federal regulations for these discharges are limited, leaving it up to individual states to oversee their environmental and health impacts. It is now up to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to set requirements for these new discharges and the myriad pollutants found in produced water. #Texas #TCEQ #Environmentaljustice #Environmental #wastewater https://lnkd.in/g_ncMw4N
